Start by focusing on short term issues. Power out for an evening is way more common than out for a few days. A small butane burner + some butane canisters takes up almost no space in your kitchen and can be grabbed in a moment.

Then a a day or two is more common than a week or two out. Power a phone with a <$100 battery bank you keep charged. Buy some more butane canisters, I tend to keep ~16 ready to go plus a backup burner. I like the burner so much I rotate them but the canisters will last a long, long time even if you don't and they're less likely to leak than propane.

Hit a goal of being self reliant for two weeks. Have the means of powering your fridge off a 1000w "power station" with solar backup or a generator. Have some water storage, even if it's just bottles in a closet. Have backups for your backups.

DESU I don't believe it's worth trying to prepare for more than a 2 week shtf scenario. At some point, evacuate. Have family or friends or a former roomate you can run to.

In the event of a nuclear armageddon the living will envy the dead so just take a bullet.
