As someone who's been tear gassed before, I can say you have no clue what you're talking about. You need goggles or something sealed around your face to cover your eyes, and something soaked in vinegar to breathe through. The diagram provides both these things, while your advice wouldn't do shit.

More importantly, check which way the wind is blowing. Before the tear gas is thrown, they toss smoke releasing canisters for that very reason. The biggest advantage you can have is to stay upwind of the source.
