this isn't some machinist's secret handshake: it is basic day 1 stuff

for 3mm(close enough the the 1/8 of an inch plate the poster I (you)ed mentioned) then literally just:

>place a few THICC machinist's parallels like pic related on their side to provide support
>place plate on parallels and tighten vice while pressing workpiece against parallels
>if any of the parallels are loose tap the top face of the plate with a rubber mallet until they are all stuck in place(meaning the piece is resting flat on the parallels)
>screw down vice and drill your little heart out

the same goes for thinner plate just use more support(but obviously make sure there is nothing under the through hole you are drilling)
