I don’t understand tip tinning. The brand new Weller tips I haven’t used come with a little coating on them but if I try and get some solder on the hot tip, it just balls up and sits at the bottom, and flux just bubbles and burns off.

Is pic related worth it? I don’t even understand the purpose of tip tinning, is it for when you turn the iron off and store it or what? I know it’s supposed to prolong the tip and slow oxidation, but how and when?
