Yes use this or something. Same one I made long ago. Should be good for 17ish dbi
3mm is far too big, for 2.4 like 1.8mm or 14ga copper works great. On 5ghz I think it needs to be very small ideally, 22ga, 0.6mm maybe. Should be fine for either because the wire length is so short.

Idk folded dipole is what yagis use.

You can .. but it will not work to great it is UKF VHF antenna .. not WIfi (2.4 / or 5.2 GHZ ) antenna

Picture showing how to make Yagi .. Antenna tried to standard 2.45GHz

and there is a link to even Better antenna but you need to have some skills to make it and do not make to long cable ( RG-9) max 10 - 15m long cable to not loose signal grained on it .. successfully used pair of two on 20km Link

i'm looking for a long range WIFI antenna of some sort, and don't want to spend much.

the goal is to transmit over 3 city blocks from my apartment to university internet.

I have already purchased a ALFA AWUS036H wifi adapter to use. i tried a piece of tinfoil as a reflector with the included omnidirectional antenna but it was not enough. i was able to pick up a very weak signal rarely. never enough to establish a connection.

after some research, this looks like about the best guide:
https://www.ab9il.net/wlan-projects/wifi6.html

the 20 element is supposed to be a little more directional/more gain so i plan to build that one.

however, it does not go over how to connect the coax to the folded dipole. this youtube video does (link is to time where picture of dipole connection is showing):

so, my question is this: is this as good as it gets without a parabolic reflector of some sort like a satellite dish? any general advice?
