Cool beans. Is there anything that this process won't work on? Any idea what type of surfaces the paint won't stick to? I wouldn't mind doing this to a number of things.

Ah, so basically dumpster diving isn't illegal, but you could get in trouble for the trespassing part of it?
Gotcha.

Well, I had nothing better to do.
The white part is the stencil, the black part is what you cut out.
Like I was sayin', the white part (stencil) is just one whole shape with no islands or floating pieces. Also when making stencils you might want to think about how well the stencil will stand up; unless you're using really strong cardboard, it will flop around if there's no support. I made supports for the shape in the pinky and thumb, connecting it to the frame so that it doesn't flop over when you try to hold it up.

How legal is it to dumpster dive? I heard somewhere that once something is put outside in the trash then it's public domain, but I've also heard of people getting arrested for dumpster diving.
I'm in Texas, am I likely to get stopped by the po-po if I dumpster dive?

>and use the cut-out filter.
Use the "Posterize" filter instead (it's under image adjustments) and set the levels to 2, this will leave you with only the white and black part of the image.

You realize /diy/ means do it yourself, right?
Anyway, to make a working stencil you need to separate the shapes into silhouettes consisting of light and dark to make your shape.
The easiest way would be to take the image to photoshop, desaturate it, mess with the brightness/contrast/levels, and use the cut-out filter.
From there you will need to adjust it so that it can be a working stencil. If you plan on doing only a one layer stencil, then you need to decide which area you're going to cut out and which area is going to be the stencil (generally the areas you cut out are going to be the shadowed area, but not always). From there you need to look at your actual stencil area and erase any islands (shapes that are not connected to other shapes, meaning they will fall out when you cut it out) or connect them to bigger shapes so that it can not fall out. Keep in mind that everything that is a part of the actual stencil has to be connected.
There can be islands of the cut out areas, but not of the stencil area. The only way to get around this would be to use a wire mesh to hold up the islands or use a multi-layered stencil.
I'm sure there's countless tutorials you can look up on the subject.
Good luck.

>Everyone suggesting that we just stuff vegetables up there
>Saying girls have it easy
You guys do know that you can cut out a hole in a watermelon and fuck that, right? Ask the Israelis.
So, how about some solutions that don't involve shoving items that rot, have germs from being in the ground for who knows how long, and have been sprayed with pesticides up the cooter?
Also, don't use a hairbrush handle; a lot of the time they will have mold seam and that can cut your insides.
If you're a straight guy trying to give suggestions when you have no experience on the subject then why are you posting here? The male toy thread doesn't get bombarded by girls/gays telling guys to fuck a watermelon.

I've never dumpster dived before, but I'm interested in doing so.
Where should I start? What would I need?
I'm just after general items of interest. I might be having to do it alone because I have no friends who would want to do that.
What kind of places should I go to start with? I think people get kinda pissed if you start going through their trash....is that against the law?...

So, I have a lot of sticks with sharp points and a lot of yarn.
Can I use this for knitting?
I have crochet needles, but I kinda want to get into knitting.
Is there anything special about knitting needles, or can I use sharp sticks or chop sticks?

Most of the things you're expecting of the deep web aren't there.
It's mostly useless things, CP, some places to buy illegal substances online, and sometimes snuff.
It's not worth the risk of getting vanned, and it's not like you're going to find super seekret government ufo files.

Sounds fairly destructive.

And yeah, I was thinkin' about that, which is why I'm using almost-new completely unbent cardboard to start with, and I don't plan to put anything too heavy in them except perhaps books in the bottom row.
Does anyone know if there's anything I can spray on the boxes after I finish them that would stop them from absorbing moisture or help keep them stiff? I don't know what would be good for that.

If it was a normal record I would suggest breaking it into pieces and making a mosaic of your favorite music artist out of it.
Not really sure what you can do with that, but you could try melting it and making it a bowl or ashtray. I believe you can do it with an oven.
You might get an interesting bowl shape since it's already warped.

What are you currently working on/building/planning to build, /diy/?

I just got a lot of good scrap cardboard, and I'm going to be workin' out the measurements to make this, as I need some shelves for all my shit, and the fact that you can reorganize n' stack them really helps. Think I might even make a long one without a tab, stick it to the wall and have it hold some of my action figures.

How hard is the plaster? If I were you I would sand it down so that the surface is a bit more smooth, and personally I think it would look better with a sharper beak (more menacing, you know). You can try going over the cracks with wood glue and covering it with more plaster. Also I would suggest giving it all a really light passover of a brownish-yellow to give it an antique look, with some brown gathering around the edges, eye holes and underside; the pure white looks too new, you know?
Hm, do you plan to add glasses to the eyes?
From what I recall, these sort of masks usually have round glasses with side shields covering the eyes.
Also don't forget to have a black cloth hanging from the back of the hat that covers your hair and neck, that's kinda part of the uniform.
If you really wanted to go full authentic you could have kept the beak hallow and filled it with herbs and flowers.
But, yeah, looks good so far. Is this for Halloween?

>College major
Art major, specializing in digital and traditional 2D media. Not really good as sculptures, but I really want to work on improving in that area.

>Current occupation
Currently I mentor middle school kids in traditional art at a non-profit after-school art program that gives free traditional, media, and theater art classes to underprivileged kids.

>Is this the job you want? If not what job do you want?
It's a pretty good job, I have lots of fun and I like teachin' kids who are eager to learn art, but unfortunately it doesn't pay enough for my to sustain myself on my own, so I'll probably have to find a better job once I graduate college and move out. I'm trying to get my master's in art so that I can teach art in college and not have to deal with bratty high school kids.

>Trade skills
Art and design, but I'm hopin' I can find projects to do from here so that I can learn more on building and constructing rather than drawing.

> Hobby's/Interests
Besides drawing/painting, I quite enjoy video games (DMC, Zelda, FF, Layton, Castlevania, Batman, ect), comic books (Batman, a ton of DC/Vertigo, Hellboy, Spawn, Sandman, Witchblade/Darkness, ect), building model sets, reading, growing plants, collecting action figures, and I work on my own comic series for fun.

>What do you do in your spare time?
See above.

Yes, I want you. Though the overuse of the symbol is a bit repetitive, could use more bat-gadget decorations...and a giant penny.
Yes. It needs a giant penny.
Not too fond of the no-bathroom-separation thing though.
Nice bathroom though.
