try a fuzz face with a bias control. the bias control will mis-bias one of the transistors and give a very synthy fuzz. Of course you will have to change the input and output caps since it's for bass. I forget if you need a larger or smaller input cap to adapt a guitar pedal to a bass pedal. as for tools: a soldering iron, needle nose pliers, wire cutters, and wire strippers. There's other stuff, but you will learn as you go. Just start in the beginner projects section and try a opamp overdrive. Something simple. Don't be afraid to ask ''stupid'' questions.
