thanks for the tips. i think i'm going to try and find some cheap electric wheelchair motors on ebay. they're "big" enough and run on 24vdc so i don't have to supply them with some weird voltages.

other scavenging options:
treadmills - weird dc voltages
alternators - ac

heard tell they're all on ebay. but if that's true it means they're too expensive for me.

1. google is your friend
2. delete that image now. not only is it against the rules, but is is meteorically low quality porn.

and/or does anyone know if starter motors from cars are easily re-purposed

also does anyone know if treadmills usually come with 1 or more motors?

hopefully i can get through this building process fast(ish) so i can start programming my deathrobot.

rad thanks. should i assume that tredmill motors don't do high rpms because people can't run very fast?

anyone want to lay some ideas on my about where/what i could scavenge some big 'ol electric motors from?

"big" is up in the air. but being able to find 2 of the same would be a huge plus.

waterproof motors is a plus, but i doubt those are really scavengeable.

i'm saving up to get a little robot kit to patrol my house (or at least my basement). it'll have an xbee and an arduino on it. planning to install ROS on my server and plug an xbee into that as well.
the kit has a PING))) sensor on a 180deg servo so i figure that if i add another couple of ir sensors on it that i can get some reasonable sensor data.

i've thought about doing some ridic primitive SLAM (since the little bugger is connected to my server computation isn't a problem) but the kit has no real way to measure distance traveled.

i don't want to make just an odometer because i'm afraid that my cheapo kit will not have nice wheels, and they'll be noisy as hell. and i don't want to set up waypoints if i don't have to.

>tl;dr
better alternative to odometer for distance traveled measurements on primitive 4 wheeled robot?

>pic related becuase PING))) looks like Sunn O)))

if you're doing this in a linux environment, the support for PIC micros isn't very good. however the support for atmel micros is really good.
