You can get them on ebay or amazon. Look up WS2812b. They come in strips that you can cut and solder. If you get these you need a power source obviously and a controller. The good thing about these are they're individually addressable so you can change it section by section, or even within the same section.

So that price is kind of doable if you only do one room. 5M of individually addressable LEDs are like $40 on ebay. You would still need a micro controller ($20), IR reciever ($2), power supply of 5V 20 amp ($30), and capacitor and wires.

The plus about using IR is that you can use a remote that goes to your TV and it works just fine. The down side is you basically have to design a UI that you have to memorize. Mine is somewhat complicated so I'm basically the only person who can use it effectively. Upside is that it's cheap. Down side to using a uC is that you have to program it yourself. The upside, which far outweighs the down side, is that you can program any number of patterns, make a custom color selector, and basically control every aspect of the lighting.

You can hook it up to your fuse box in the car. Depending on the amp draw you want to hook it up to a higher amp fuse. Your fuse box probably has unused fuse place holders that you can use.

Nice trips. Go to spark fun and look under sensors. You can wire up one of the pressure sensors to an Arduino which you can also use to control the lights. The programming could be rather simple depending on what you want to do. If it's just pressure activated with one sensor super easy. You could get fancy and have five, one for each toe to select light sequences.

So a bill of material would probably be

EL is ok, but it's not that bright and definitely not water resistant.

ELastoLite is a step up. It's like EL, but they're water proof and I do believe you can cut the glowing material to make patterns. Again, not very bright but a step up from EL.

Finally, there's the good ole' LED. This is what I would recommend because you can buy LED strips for dirt cheap with a water resistant sheath and make/buy a small waterproof case for the battery and/or controller.

That is true. I guess OP would have to find out what type of LED it is, but that really isn't going to be an option. Best bet would be to just get some WS2812B's, and Arduino with an IR receiver, and a T.V. remote. That's what I did.

Seeing that I use these things in all sorts of applications in many different situations I have to say that you don't have to worry at all about heat. Also, the max power draw is is 90mW total. So yeah I don't really see a problem with using the resin.
