The mark of a great pizza place is a fantastic cheese pizza. It is the base of all (not shitty) pizzas, and you need it to stand out in order for the pizza to excel. "Pizza" that relies on piling on a plethora of toppings is subpar and should be shunned. Pizza should (typically) not have any more than 2 toppings as the flavors won't meld very well. Of course there are exceptions, but I don't expect the typical pizza place to have good proportions as the typical American customer just wants a load of toppings on the pizza without regard for actual flavor. They just want to shovel as many meats into their mouth as possible. It's absolutely revolting.

If you're that snobbish about pizza, you should be well aware that ALL the ingredients in mainstream pizza places are garbage. I'm sure you could make a really good cheese pizza with unusual cheeses, but strictly comparing the two within your usual 'murrican pizza places (Domino's, Little Caesars, Papa Johns, etc.) pepperoni is going to taste better.
