but yeah, its utter shit.
Bought a bottle once, because I wanted a bottle of cheap, but not terribly cheap whiskey to take with me on a festival, and i figured that should do the trick, because unlike some no-name cheap whiskey, they'd probably have a reputation to uphold.

Production cycle is shorter for the most part (obviously ignoring stuff like sherry or wineries that cellar their stuff for several years)

There's also a surplus of wine grapes in Europe (also in general, this year was bad), and a lot of it gets bought off and turned into industrial ethanol to keep the industry from crashing completely. So the lower bound of prices is basically as low as politically sustainable, it could even be lower

It's only expensive if you insist that your life is not complete unless you have had a wine from some extremely specific patch of land in the cote de nuits

Obviously, retarded memesters who live their lives gripped in fear of trying anything new aren't going to be able to find the good wines that aren't crazy expensive, so they either drink swill (aussie wine, lodi wine, etc) or they just get angry whenever wine comes up in conversation

Correct me if I'm wrong, but brandy and rum both taste 100% better than whiskey, so why is whisky so much more popular?

I love brandy but I NEVER meet anyone else who drinks it. Ever since high school kids drank Jack, and it seems to me more like it was a matter of convention than a selection based off taste.

Is that what it is? Do people tend to explore whiskey because of convention, or because there is legitimately more variety and sophistication in it?

Whisky is more popular because wheat, barley, and rye have always been easy to grow and cultivate. Sugar cane needs plenty of care and good climate to grow and molasses is harder, still, to get.

More modernly, whisky is widely available and well advertised. Rum is associated with drunks and college-kid drinks.
But hey if you prefer rum or brandy to whisky, there's nothing stopping you from enjoying it.

Jack Daniels being shit is an internet meme. It's not a great value, that's for sure. If they market it as "smooth" what they really mean is "flavorless". It's not harsh, I'll give them that. There is a huge variety of flavor to whisky. Compare a bourbon like BT to an Islay Scotch like Lagavulin and while you'll notice similarities with the wood used being oak giving both vanilla and toffee flavors along with some woodspice that'll be the only similarities. Whisky varies in oiliness, use of proteins and amino acids, effects from finishes in different wine casks or spirit casks, whisky making is a science just like making a good brandy is! Spirits in general are a great hobby to really explore how nature shapes what we experience and how a simple ethanol can be made into something incredible!

From my experience talking to buyers and connoisseurs there is only one rule of buying whisky, only buy the bottles you'll want to drink. Single malt whisky is not what it used to be and now all the special editions are so high in bottle run that they won't be worth a lot unless they're REALLY REALLY REALLY good and sought after but even then a significant return would take decades maybe an entire century even.
If you want to invest do stocks or precious metals, hell even bitcoin will give you better returns than vintage whisky.

>I actually liked the current batch of Talisker Storm I had. Weird wonder why it's so hated.
It was tolerable near the end, when the whisky had oxidized a little in the bottle and lost a bunch of its "impact." It was sweeter then; I could detect faint traces of vanilla and oak at times, and it's the closest the whisky ever got to feeling balanced.

But by design it's trying to be big and bold like the other heavy-hitting peaters, and instead it just tastes young and harsh. Like bitter, GREEN wood, not a proper cask.

I only learned later, when it was too late, that the NAS label means whiskys aged 3 to 25 make their way into the bottle...and I'm guessing more of the former than the latter.

It reminded me of Winchester bourbon from Total Wine, which is also a pitiful 2 years old, and which also tastes like green sawdust (though without the peat, obviously).

You just need to find your gateway whiskey, anon.

I was like you; I'd tried bourbons, Tennessees, and many, many ryes. All were foul.

But then I tried a Scotch (The Glenlivet 12), and later, an Irish (Jameson), and I was, thenceforth, introduced to the softer, gentler side of the spirit.

I'd recommend either to you, since both are sweet, but in a light, crisp, refreshing way; none too syrupy and cloying like many bourbons can be. You'll detect notes of green apples and pears in both, and yes, honeyed malt. In the Irish you'll swear you can smell espresso. (That's the copper pot-still.)

Make a thread once you've tried one of these, because I think you'll change your mind.

I agree. The big prices often come from availability. I've had a $2000 glass of wine that was some of the best wine I've had, but not enough to justify the price. The price was justified by the fact that it had been sitting around unopened in a good environment for decades and was recently discovered by someone to be in very good shape. Only a hundred or so bottles of it known to have been kept in similar conditions makes enough people willing to pay crazy prices. With whisky it also gets into who is doing the blending for the lower end expensive stuff.

Last time i had it though was not the Solera i think but i can imagine that's going to be a nice addition to the experience.

Now if it can come a bit further under 100AUD i'm all over it.

Here in some regions of Spain we drink what we call a "cigaló" (in Catalan), or a "carajillo" (in spanish)
It is simply coffee (usually espresso or moka) with Scotch. Proportion is about 1/3 of scotch, or even half of the cup if you like it stronger.
We normally use cheap scotch (J&B). I haven't tried it with a decent whisky, but I guess that it could be at least interesting, provided the coffee is also good.

I drink that thing every morning before work.
