No idea. Born and raised in England. I've visited Japan, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Romania. Moved to the States a bit ago and visited the majority of the states, particularly the ones with unique cuisine.

I have to say that I have no idea where the meme comes from that British cuisine is bland or bad. I know we have a bunch of weird shit, but a lot of the rest is actually super good. Some of the weird stuff is even good.

Lower upper class btw. Or upper lower. I have no idea how the order works. I am upper class but on the lower side.

I for one, a humble leaf, enjoy British cuisine. But I like stuff like

>Yorkshire Pudding
>Shepard's Pie / Cottage Pie
>Jacket Potatoes
>Braised Beef
>Lamb Stew

I have no idea what you guys see in congealed blood or pig entrails wrapped in skin or a slightly grilled tomato or canned baked beans, and I don't know why you so proudly showcase these as your national foods over the former. Meat and potatoes are something the whole world enjoys.

Marmite/vegemite is hard to get into, same goes for blood sausage. When it comes to other foods, like pie and mash with parsley sauce and jellied eels, people generally look at it as bland. (All of these are pretty good in my eyes.)

As an american who grew up with appalachian, scots-irish type home-cooked meals, like american biscuits and gravy, beef stew, country ham, etc. I'm not unfamliar with lightly-seasoned/bland foods, which is to say, any seasonings other than salt and pepper. They aren't the best, but I can see the appeal. There's nothing unworthy of respect about foods where you are supposed to really taste the main ingredients. Fujian chinese food is also supposed to be bland in this way.

I think you can't really call any cuisine objectively bad (except perhaps Dutch cuisine which fucking sucks), but you can definitely call our food culture pretty dreadful. Only in the last couple of decades have things been getting slightly better. I'm talking about the average Brit mind you. There are definitely a whole load of traditional foods and recipes that have been forever lost over the years too.

If you find a job that interests you it's easy. My great-grandad pissed the majority of it away including the family seat, which is pretty frustrating.

In any case, I want to learn more about English cuisine. My knowledge stops at, like, Shepard's/Cottage Pie and Fish and Chips, both of which I love. I wanna visit the UK one day and wanna know what sorta shit I should definitely try when I'm there, or at least learn to cook.

Haggis was fucking fantastic, really do miss that, fry ups are really great but being honest I don't think I could eat one every day, jacket potatoes are always solid, British cheddar is a fantastic cheese, salmon and tuna are fucking delicious and quite cheap, also shrimp, speaking of, Brit bacon best bacon. There's a good little programme last week that discussed this. It basically blamed the world wars, but the second one in particular. Before then the British diet was very varied with foods all over the Empire and Europe coming to Britain. But because of the food and fuel restrictions of WW2 everything became basic and bland. Then the Yanks came strolling in with their nylons and malt shakes, after Britain suffered years of isolation and bombings, and starting bitching about everything on their first day.

Rationing persisted long after the war into the 50s, but it wasn't until the 80s that the average Briton became rich enough to afford the luxuries of a varied diet again.

When I was studying abroad in Japan, the school's english newspaper had a British edition and ran an article about how no one likes British food. The writer, in really broken english, said that british food is bland because anglo-saxons are a warlike people and had to survive on barely cooked meat through constant warfare, then concluded it was a good thing Indian food is getting popular there. Until then I thought it was only a /ck/ meme to hate British food.

Incorrect.

The original recipes called for "Beef, or whatever meat can be found". The association with a shepherd has nothing to do with lamb. That's a modern concept. It was originally called that because it's the ultimate poverty dish, and a shepherd is a stereotypical poor person: take whatever meat and veggies you can find and cook it into a pie.

It would be silly for a shepherd to put lamb in his pie. Shepherds raised sheep for wool. Slaughtering a lamb would be undermining a shepherd's very means of survival--it would be just as idiotic as a carpenter burning the handles of his tools to cook with.

it's a new-ish country with a small population and near-homogenously British until the 50s

also there are nearly no unique ingredients, only a tiny handful of native species are viable food crops even with modern technology and this basically amounts to some weird tropical fruits and the macadamia nut (this is also the chief reason abos never did and never would have developed a settled society)

the potential to develop a unique cuisine was never there

It's often quite basic and hearty food but it isn't terrible by any stretch of the imagination. Every review of people eating Dutch food i've seen has been overwhelmingly positive.

I'd imagine more Northern cuisines like Finnish and Icelandic could be quite worse, due to the climate, but I can't really judge.

Okay. Stop right there you knife eared piece of shit.
The "bakewell tart" is not a proper thing, it is an invention of the kipling faggots company which ripped off the bakewell pudding.
The pudding which is cool and good, but no-one outside of derbyshire has ever heard of it because of kipling's saturation bullshit.
>Fun fact:
If you go into Bakewell, and into one of the many bakeries in the town and ask for a "bakewell tart", you will either get told "there's no such thing" or "we don't do those".
>t. living in derbyshire and being a dick as a kid

Seriously tho. If you ever get chance to try a bakewell pudding, you'll never be able to eat a "tart" again without being disappointed it's not a pudding.

Sunday roast (roast beef with horseradish sauce)
Beef wellington
Steak and ale pie
Various stews
Fish and chips
A bunch of cheeses
Shepherds/Cottage pie
Macaroni cheese

British cuisine is so good that even other nations try to pretend they invented it, see: macaroni cheese.

It's good homely, hearty food. Sure it's not overflowing in herbs and spices, but it doesn't need to be to be full of flavour, and there are still a lot of intense flavours like horseradish sauce which when made fresh is extremely hot, the same goes for English mustard.
