how come nobody told me these were so good? i always assumed they would be super fishy and full of bones and shit.

instead it's a rich, non fishy flavor that i enjoy both hot and cold. miles better than canned tuna as a quick no-cook lunch. it's not too often that you find a pantry staple but i did it.

Herring and sardine are common names, not scientific names, and their definitions are quite loose. Neither name corresponds to any particular species. The various fish species that would be called sardine or herring are all part of the same taxonomic family (Clupeidae).

I think they're pretty similar, the main difference being size. Fish labeled as sardines will generally be smaller, and have a softer texture. But if you buy smoked sardines that have been packed in oil, the flavor will be very much like the flavor of kippered herring.

But to return to the topic of the thread, you should eat sardines instead. Chad fish like Tuna accumulate tons of mercury cause they're high on the food chain, but sardines don't. Their mercury levels are negligible, so you can chow down all you want. Unless you eat the smoked ones, which might give you cancer.

I just ate them straight out of the can with a fork my first time. Eating them on crackers is great though, that or some nice toasted baguette slices. They come packed in hot sauce if that's your thing, but I think my favorite so far is the kind packed in mustard sauce.

The best “common” brands are king Oscar and coles. Honestly my favorite way to eat them is straight out of the can. Get the ones in olive oil. They taste similar to canned tuna so you can pretty much use them the same way you use tuna (tuna salad, tuna melt, etc)
