If I remember correctly, there was a Suntory distillery between Osaka and Kyoto. I remember seeing it on my way to Nara and always wanted to go there. A friend of mine did go there and took a tour, think he got to sample some of their higher end whiskies, think he mentioned he even got a very little sip of the 30 year Hibiki, but I could be mistaken. Definitely recommend the Hibiki 17 and 21, though the 21 will blow the 17 out of the water.

Also, if you can, keep an eye out for the Nikka whiskies as they are another Japanese distillery. Can't say that I know too terribly much about them as I was a poor college student studying abroad then, but definitely try some of their stuff.

And maybe check out Nonjatta (http://www.nonjatta.com/)) or some other Japanese whisky blog as they might have good recommendations on what to get/where to go.

17's damn good but the 21 is definitely better. Better in terms of smoothness and more unique flavor. I can't remember the 17 too well as I haven't seen a bottle in about 6-7 years, but I definitely remember the 21 just blowing the 17 out of the water. Obviously subjective, but to me it's as follows:

Nose: butterscotch, floral, slightly fruity
Body: smooth, feels like it melts on your tongue
Taste: faint oak followed by malt and honey/vanilla, slightly fruity - want to say plum
Finish: long and very faint smoke

Definitely try to get some if you can as it's probably one of my favorite whiskies.

Well, if you want to go by low tier Japanese whisky, Suntory's also got their kakubin yellow and black labels that they intend people to mix with water/soda. Stuff's not that great and it's sold in pretty much ever convenience store right next to Nikka's stuff too. Again, you'll probably want to investigate looking for some higher quality stuff. Maybe look for Nikka's Yoichi 12 year or Taketsuru 17 year.

Ardbeg 10 is probably my favourite. Try Laphroaig Quarter Cask, like ardbeg it is non chill filtered and natural colour. Usually a bit cheaper too. The regular Laphroaig 10 is good too, but whatever you do don't go near the Select.

Scotch and Irish are pretty similar. Both of them use barley, though Irish whiskies don't use peat when drying and preparing the grain. Irish whisky also uses a mix of raw and malted barley in their mash. In addition, Irish whiskies are triple distilled, rather than the usual double distillation that most Scotch goes through, some exceptions are Auchentoshen and Hazelburn (http://www.springbankwhisky.com/whisky/hazelburn/).). That's pretty much it in differences I believe.
