8558959 No.8558959 [Reply] [Original]

I'm thinking of starting a monthly cooking challenge thread, in the style of past years' challenges but in a more casual and available format. The rest of this post will be blatantly copied from the blog.

There will be a random theme given at the start of each month, perhaps selected via voters. Participants have the whole month to come up with a dish and post it in the thread, and everyone is welcome to rate the dishes.

> Community Interest
I want to know if there's interest in this challenge. If there's only 4-5 people interested it's a lot less fun.

If you're new to /ck/ and want to check past years, they are collected on the blog at : http://ckchallenge.blogspot.ca/

> Got a round theme suggestion?
Make it here! I will be tallying them up. I will post the themes from previous years in a reply.

>Want rules to be changed?
Make your suggestion here, please.

>Want to help behind the scenes?
Drop your email. In case I can't be around at the start of the month, you'll get the info necessary to make the new thread.

If theres anyone who can make a better splash page than this one that I put together in MS paint that would be cool too.

>prizes??
The logistics are honestly too much work since I'm much lazier than bubble, so the only thing you get is bragging rights on a Mongolian fermented horse milk discussion forum.

I think with the state of the board and how the challenge went last year smaller challenges once a month or once every two weeks would probably be the better way to do it. Something more laid back than the large challenge with prizes at stake.

>> No.8562325

I have a theory to fix the judging trolling.

Simply if you want to be a judge you have to have a form of registration. Like say in the registration process you are required to take a proof pic with your hand in front of your stove or something to cut down on people trying to vote multiple times, then that person gets a tripcode to vote with. Maybe sounds crazy but I see not many other ways because even a poll site that allows 1 vote per IP is easily trollable.

Found my old post regarding the better score scaling formula. It was created in order to thwart people who submitted their entries last minute and got a single high vote which made them skyrocket in points.

The original formula: TS (Total Score) / TV (Total Vote)
The modified formula: TS (Total Score) / TV (Total Vote) / 2 (Limiter) = AS (Adjusted Score) + TV (Total Vote)

[ Original Formula Example ]

John has his dish voted on by 10 people. His total score is 120.
Using the original formula of TS / TV, his final adjusted score becomes 16.

Jill has her dish voted on by 1 person. Her total score is 20.
Using the original formula of TS / TV, her final adjusted score becomes 20.

[ Modified Formula Example ]

John has his dish voted on by 10 people. His total score is 120.
Using the modified formula of TS / TV / 2 + TV, his final adjusted score becomes 16.

Jill has her dish voted on by 1 person. Her total score is 20.
Using the modified formula of TS / TV / 2 + TV, her final adjusted score becomes 11.

------------

The formula to my recollection scales very well is the varying amount of scores. It might be something to consider.
If you're still interested in running the numbers Bubble, your thoughts would be very welcome on the subject.

But what if two guys have the same average but the one guy wins because he had one extra person vote for him? Personally that kind of system sounds unfair. A better solution would be to have a deadline for submissions but a longer deadline (maybe 24 hours if needbe) for judging so more people get a say in decisions

>> No.8563097

>>8563051

>But what if two guys have the same average but the one guy wins because he had one extra person vote for him?

It's by no means a perfect system, it's simply causing an inverse of the original problem which allowed intentionally late entries to gain an upper leg on entries submitted in a timely and non-manipulated fashion. Even the original would be prone to variance if two entries were submitted at the same time but someone decided to opt out of voting for one of them.

If the direction of these challenges follows the same voting format, I would still have to recommend the modified version to limit the last minute manipulation. The idea of giving a longer deadline only fixes one part of the problem. If again someone voted for one entry and didn't vote for the other even given the extended time, there would still be a scoring variance.

>What alternatives would you suggest?

Abstained votes should have all other votes disregarded. If someone votes for 9 people out of 10, those 9 votes shouldn't count for potential manipulative reasoning behind it. The Total Score / Total Votes would then be a solid system by which to determine score.

A streamlined round from start to end would look something like this:

1) Announce theme, allow X days for preparation.
2) Begin round submission, allow X days for entries.
3) End round. New thread with all valid entries posted.
4) Voting begins. Anons judging must vote for all entries in a single post. Any voting exclusion of an entry by an individual should have all other votes cast by that individual become null.
5) Tally and present winner.

Stops the last minute entry manipulation.
Stops vote formula manipulation.

The only thing it wouldn't stop would be multiple judgements by the same individual, which is near impossible on an anonymous board such as this. Still, 2 out of 3 nipped in the butt isn't bad.

While that sounds good on paper, I think that might scare way the voters as voting and commenting on 3 weeks worth of submissions might be too much. There's a character limit on posts too.

I'm currently leaning more towards having voters free to post comments and advice in the submissions thread as well, then have a more serious identification method for the final week of voting. Or scrap the serious voting altogether.

I appreciate your attempt at picking up the torch, so to speak.
I'm not a trip or name fag, but I've been here since around 2008 or 09 and I know that you already have an internet boyfriend.
But besides all that, all that aside, neverminding that, what were we talking about?
I'm into the idea of a monthly challenge, whether it's judged or not. The FML threads are really encouraging. When I got here PHS guy was getting ass-hassled for no reason but for contributing original content. Stood up for him/her a few times before I realized that I was still on 4chan and it's normal to get shit on for OC.
I think "the trolls" (actual posters, not lurkers) will have a heyday with it, so I'd expect their support in your endeavour. Hey, it's what makes us different from other places.

>If you (or or any secret pro amateur photographers lurking) don't mind writing a short paragraph guide on how to take the best pics with a phone camera I could include it in the OP post.

Lighting: Make sure your room is well lit. Always keep the light to your back, otherwise shadows will cast over what you're attempting to take a picture of and cause it to come out more dark. If you're standing in front of something you want to take a picture of, you want the light to be directly in back of the subject casting towards you.

Camera Angle: Unless you're taking a picture from top-down at 90 degrees, the best angle you can shoot for is between 30-60 degrees. Take as many pictures of the subject as you can between these angles, and don't feel hesitant to rotate the dish to capture all sides since some may look better than the other. Also don't feel hesitant about moving around the room adjusting your own position to capture better back drops or adjust shadow position.

Megapixel: Always use the highest megapixel or resolution when taking a picture. The file may be large in size, but it will also capture the most detail. During the editing process you can scale down the photo to a more manageable size, and because you took the picture at a high megapixel the details will be sharper and more crisp.

Zoom: Don't use any zoom functions to try and get a tighter shot. Zooming tends to cause artifacting within the picture and will distort any sharpness or crispness you're trying to achieve. Instead of zooming in with the camera, physically move in closer to the object to obtain the zoomed in effect.

Filters: Familiarize yourself with your phones filters, and whether it has options like multi-point focus. Since there are tons of filters available and phones vary in which ones they carry, you'll need to do your own research on your phone to find out how to maximize the quality of the shot you're taking by using the filters that are available to you.

I'd be up for competing again. I joined last year as an amateur and I made it quite far since so many people kept dropping out lol.

In terms of voting process, I think there should be two separate deadlines for contestant submission and end of voting. Having both at the same time distorted the results and separate deadlines would be a better way of capturing more votes as well as fairer vote proportion. I would personally back the option of every vote counting (rather than enforcing registration/identity validation or disregarding voters that don't vote for everyone), because it is more inclusive for all /ck/ posters and creates less of an authoritarian atmosphere. Right so basically this isn't at all accessible in that you will only count scores when a voter has something to say about every dish? Not very fun in my opinion. Yeah, the food in KL was breddy gud. Seemed to be mostly curries. Beats hell out of "here's yet more shit we threw in a deep fryer for an hour and then sprinkled with pepper" that Taiwan does. I used to go to the Indonesian places here, which seemed pretty similar, but they've mostly disappeared now.

I was surprised to find that Borneo is divided three ways. I thought it was all Indonesia. Ever get up to Brunei? Anything interesting there?

The hardass /ck/ community posters are the people who push for more and stricter moderation, stickies, dividing the board into "serious cooking" and fast foodies, etc.
