Depends on where you are in the caste system.

People in lower castes (who generally wind up being poorer) eat beef, chicken, and animals in their diet.

People in higher castes are usually vegetarian because they view meat as impure/unholy to eat. They don't want to be seen on the same level as those in the lower castes.
