What are some good recipes to try for someone new to ck (me)?

Depends what kind of foods you like and what's available to you.
I'm a big fan of soft boiled steaks. Pro tip: use whole milk instead water for a creamy texture.

This is THE BEEEEEEST Mac n' Cheese!!!!!!

fry an egg and cut it into quarters. season each quarter differently to experiment with mixing different seasonings

How experienced are you in the kitchen? Where are you from? What is available to you?

At any rate, I'd recommend you start with some simple sauteed dishes, but that's my personal bias. Chicken Picatta, Fettuccine Alfredo, Chicken Mole, and Curry are some of my favorite quick and (relatively) easy meals to make.

something basic, like a chicken based stir fry over rice would be a good starter.

dice a good cup or so of chicken, salt, add to an oiled pan with maybe some diced mushrooms, sliced green peppers, maybe a bit of diced celery, etc...(veggies to taste, that is).

dump some soy sauce to taste (1-2 tbsp, if you can't taste), and cook on medium until the chickens cooked.

serve over rice. there, meal.

such a meal basically teaches you the very basics you need to cook anything. making you figure out seasonings to taste just makes you even more experienced.

try making a steak next. then make some noodles or something. then figure out a roux and white sauce.

then bam: make a fucking beef over noodles kind of plate.
