The real question is why do people drink diet soda? I'm an occasional soda drinker, i.e. I have a glass two or three times a month when eating out. Other than that, I don't eat sweets and my sugar intakes pretty limited, yet I still don't find Coke disgustingly sweet like some people claim.

What I do find is that the syrupy sweetness is what gives the drink its character, and that diet versions just taste bland by comparison. They barely have a defined taste, tasting more like mildly sweetened carbonated water. There is literally no situation in which any reasonable person should go for diet soda instead of water, unless they're an out-of-control addict who needs a placebo.

Can't believe no one has mentioned this but as someone who has managed a resteraunt before one of the big reasons why this has to be mentioned is because if someone asks for Coke and you give them a Pepsi without telling them then you can actually get in trouble with the company that makes Coke because you've misrepresented their product. If that person has a bad experience drinking that Pepsi and then goes on to complain or never drink Coke again it would be the fault of the server who did not ask if Pepsi was okay rather than Coke itself. Additionally, when a resteraunt pays for Coke they are paying for brand recognition, no one is stopping them from getting off brand soda, so selling something that's not Coke as Coke is also stealing brand recognition in a way.

Not saying it makes sense, just saying that's why.

Your strawman is cute and all but as >>7839083
pointed out before me, you really can get sued. In fact it's common knowledge, and only an incompetent joke of a waiter would so proudly state his glaring mistakes. I guess there's a reason you USED to work there.

I'm the original guy who posted that I serve people Pepsi when they asked for coke. Not sure why someone posted that strawman arguement. Anyway, coke doesn't ubiquitously mean Coca Cola and they certainly don't own the rights to it, so no chance of legal action. At least in the country I used to work in. That's why I differentiate when people ask for Coca Cola.

Coke is literally a genericized term for "soda" in some parts of the United states and Europe:

I'm sure they could easily get away winning any case under the widespread usage of coke as a generic term.
