Greetings all,

I've never been on /ck/ before, so I apologize if this thread is inappropriate for this board.

I live in San Diego and am pretty sick of IPAs, so I'm looking for an affordable craft sour beer. The only beer I can think of is Petrus, but it's only sold in bigger bottles for over $20.00.

Any recommendations?

This is a valuable thread, and I would also like some recommendations on where to find cheap sours outside of Europe.

>> No.7527198

sours by nature do not come cheap as they have to age like a wine to achieve the full flavor potential

That's a shame. I always think they're a great way to start off a night, before finding something that takes a little more work.

bro no.
If you want a brewery in SD, a friend of a friend recently opened Helix brewery, has sours coming soon.

You should easily be able to find Almanac sours which are probably 4 or 5 of my Top 10 sours.
The Breuery also puts out some amazing sours, taking the remaining 5-6 spots in my Top 10 list.
Almanac should be easier to find but is damn delicious.

Sours still really arent getting into many stores, find a good liquor store.
my nearby bevmo has some decent options.

I dont know where you are located in SD, but if you arent too far away from SDSU campus, check out Keg and Bottle, they have a good selection of everything, with more sours showing up the last couple of times that ive been there.

Id heavily recommend making a trip up to Orange County to visit The Breuery.

lastly, sours arent cheap, they most likely never will be.

They don't come cheap, but they come a lot cheaper than $20 per 22oz bottle

not OP, but Almanac just started selling in my market, what should I keep my eye open for?

Honestly, any of them. I find that most of the stores get one or two types, and then swap to a newer release every month or so.

Buddha's Hand Citrus was top tier.
I just had a Blackberry Sour and a Blueberry Sour this week, both were excellent. Cherry Dogpatch Sour was out of this world.

true. Try to find a local brewery that specializes in sours. I live in colorado and there are several which do.

Also if you consider beers fermented via brettanomyces to be 'sours' then brett saisons are much cheaper but are more beer-like than a belgian-style sour

linda vista, all of my liquor stores—and we have a grip of them—seem to only stock IPAs as specialty drinks. i'm surrounded in arrogant bastard, green flash, stone, and ballast point

ballast point has blown up since they got bought out. Sad but at least I can get them on the east coast now, though I'm sure quality has gone downhill.

Not a sour beer but def a good tasting beer, like a mix between a cloudy lager and an ale.

Every brewery is making a cheap gose anymore. Anderson Valley, Boulevard, Victory, Sierra Nevada, Destihl and Uinta all have them. Belgian sour styles and American Wilds are going to be more expensive because of the time that goes into them.

I drink good ones whenever I can, but Anderson Valley's new Briney Melon Gose is my go to now it's getting hot out.

>> No.7528826

>>7528800
I've tried Wilds and Belgians before, but don't think I've ever had a Gose. Are they significantly different?

>> No.7528827

A better (imo), cheaper alternative is gose style beer. Tart, salty, briney, and a 12 pack of SN otra whatever is like 12$. There are a good few other breweries putting these out.
On the other hand, Star of the North from Schell's is phenomenal and around 14$ a bottle.

First "vintage" beer then cicerones, now you people are just straight up naming your beers after wine

Beer is to wine as Chicago is to New York. You can stamp your feet and insist you don't have an obsessive stalker-tier inferiority complex, but your actions prove otherwise
