Old one is on the way out!

Drinking, buying, looking for or maybe even cellaring?

On the subject of pic related. Quite different from their other hoppy offerings. I quite enjoyed it.

Indeed it was very tasty! Really love the bomber bottles as well, two glasses in one!

Followed it up with one of the worst beers i have ever had! The artificial candy tones of peach gummy bears filled the kitchen when i poured it up, looked good so i had a zip even though my mind told me to just pour it out.

I would have loved this one as a kid, remember eating peach candy all the time back in the day.
This flavor in a beer sadly means it goes straight down the drain after nearly throwing up.l

Might as well post the starter for the evening, not beer though.

First try at a homebrew hard cider, some beer relation as it is dryhopped as a beer with some CTZ and Amarillo. Turned out really tasty and clear, the haze is condensation on the glass!

Here in Southern California, a pint of a nice IPA/Stout/Porter runs from $4-$7 depending on the gravity and the general "goodness" of the beer. Usually if it's going out with friends, we'll meet up at someone's home and have like a mini bottle share before heading out. I don't really drink when I go out to restaurants anymore, it's expensive and usually the stuff they have on tap is either meh or I've had it way too many times (and it's cheaper to just buy a 6er of it).

Yeah I was starting to realize I'm completely dependent on alcohol to feel "normal".

Not out of control drunk but the idea of going a week without booze made me really uncomfortable

So I'm doing regular gaps with increasing distance. I did one night without alcohol, then resumed for five days. I did two nights without alcohol, then resumed for five days. I got up to 3 nights lately which I think is pretty good. Tonight will be my second night back drinking.

If I look at "no drinking night" like I would have looked at "movie night" or "the night I hang out with that relative I'm obliged to hang out with sometimes", it's not so terrifying. I can literally psych myself up for the crazy crazy feeling of having a whole night ahead of me, sober.

Dunno if it will work for anyone else but it seems like a worthwhile technique.

Ever since I started drinking beer (only three months), I have been making it a point to stay away from all IPAs because of how bitter they supposedly are. I remember one of my first beers being a dragons milk imperial stout, and I was disgusted by it at first, and didn't touch the remaining 3 bottles until two months later.

After trying many beers, I figured what the hell, I'll give it another go. Obviously it tasted different than before, and I actually enjoyed it.

So I bought pic related to try. It really wasn't as bitter as I was led to believe. I actually kinda enjoyed the way it tasted, but the aftertaste was kinda odd.

Where do you guys go to find your beers?

The liqour stores near me all overprice their beer, and almost everything I want to try from them is past its best by date. A six pack of fucking samuel adams is like $12 usd at these places.

The supermarkets near me don't have nearly as large of a selection as the liqour stores, but at least everything isn't expired or overpriced.

What state do you live in anon? I live in Illinois but as far as I know that's pretty much how liquor stores work, the prices will always be a bit higher than the supermarket, say about $1.50 or something like that over the price you're used to seeing; but they have a much bigger selection. If your bottle store has a lot of beers that are past their "best by" date then you need to find a new store. Any respectable bottle store will either pull past date bottles or put them on clearance for absurdly low prices.

TL;DR find a new bottle store, shop around, sometimes the best store is going to be a bit more of a drive but it will be worth it.

Mostly from bottles, yeah. I usually look at the production date and try to buy relatively fresh beer, typically a week or two old. It shows best when the beer is warm and has been opened for a minute or two. It's not the sweetness that you feel right off the bat. It's like, immediately after you gulp it down, you feel this sweet taste in your mouth.

Made my way down to the city and picked up some of this. Only available in Maine.

Pours a slightly hazed sun-yellow color, with a decent, froth head. Smells of skunky citrus peel, onion and biscuity malts, which add a gentle sweetness to the nose. As the beer warms up, a well pronounced dankness evolves from this balancing sweetness, together with ripe oranges blending right into wet grass. Has a very pleasant mouthfeel, due to a medium carbonation, revealing an incredible hop profile, ranging from flowery, to fruity to bitter. Showcases an awesome depth and versatility. Tastes of white bread malts, accompanied by a mineralic quality, inviting a bubbly carbonation to the palate. On top of that settle the hops, ranging between sweet exotic fruits, crisp, lemon dipped grass and flowery undertones, perfectly balanced by dough malts. Finishes utmost refreshing, due to the bubbly carbonation, together with dry lime, amped up by sunny, ripe oranges. Fantastic, flavorfull ipa, providing an absurd flavor depth, coming outstandingly well together, completed by a perfectly fitting carbonation, creating a powerful, dry and refreshing beer.

I disagree. The northeast may not have as many big name, popular wide distribution breweries, but it is producing beers as top quality as anywhere else.

Any individual state may not produce as many high quality breweries as, say, California, however, the northeast as a whole is a fantastic place for beer.

The main problem with the Northeast is, as you alluded to, the extremely limited availability of a lot of the very best beers.

Honestly, there is great beer being brewed almost anywhere in the country right now, which is great.

>> No.6829257

The reason I would say New England is lacking (relatively, its still pretty good) is because so much of its good beer isn't even widely available locally. If you go to a typical grocery store or liquor store in say Minnesota/Wisconsin or San Diego/San Francisco you are probably going to have a better selection than one in Boston. >Can someone define the terms lager, stout and ale for me
The difference between lager and stout is the strain of yeast used. Ale uses a top fermenting yeast that works at room temperature, lager a bottom fermenting yeast that works best at cool temperatures. Different yeast strains impart different flavors as they release slightly different by products during fermentation (which is in large part because the temperature makes certain chemical reactions more likely)

Stouts are beer that use roasted barely that imparts a darker color and roasty flavor, they are typically ales

this is my first time on /ck/ and i didn't know you guys talked about alcohol on here, i'm assuming that you all at least kind of know what you're talking about so i was wondering if you might could answer me a question?
up until about 22 yo i could drink beer just fine, but then when i drank it my throat swelled up a bit, and my face, mainly my eyes tho.. and they got real itchy. i can drink malt liquors though, like smirnoff ice and the likes. i can also drink rum/whiskey just fine. do you guys know what could be wrong with me? i went to an allergy doctor and he said "that's not an allergy", "i'd quit drinking beer".. no shit but some of the strip clubs i go to only serve beer

thanks for any responses /ck/

This isn't even true. Actually, lets just consider something really quick.

Could it be possible, that in a general sense, in the craft beer scene, not just on BA but in a general sense, that the most popular styles would be the most hyped up and have the most people wanting them and overhyping them?

Yes, it could, because IPAs and barrel aged stouts are the two big things in the scene right now, however, that doesn't equate to people, or BA not liking anything else.

If you even browse the forums for a bit you will see A LOT of people drinking/talking about every kind of beer. Belgians, hefes, wits, saison, even lagers and pilsners! And guess what? Plenty of them have good ratings, and guess what else? People complain about some American ones for being too hoppy! UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

The kind of thinking/stereotyping you guys are doing is just so fucking stupid, I mean holy shit. Can you not grasp the fact that just because certain things are popular and get the most reception doesn't mean there is a lack of appreciation for everything else? Fuck.
