The reason they stay cold longer than ice is because they're shit at transferring heat. Whiskey stones will make your drink tepid for longer, but it won't give you that refreshing, clean chill you want, and they take forever to recharge, when you could just refresh ice by dumping out the old and adding the new.

Some whiskeys (or whatever booze) taste like shit when any amount of water is added.

Sometimes a chilled whiskey is more refreshing than a warm/room temperature drink, especially on warmer days.

Some people are so beta that they can't drink anything without being told it's socially acceptable.

The water releases more fragrances and softens a scotch. The idea is to have a much more enjoyable palatable experience through dilution as opposed to say drinking it straight which absolutely wrecks your palate (this makes all scotch taste the same afterward so a taste flight is not really possible straight). Tap water has chlorine which could cloud a scotch's character. The water sourced from different areas such as Speyside, Highlands and Isaly are very close to each other with minute differences in hardness and mineral content which have complimentary effects when it is used to dilute their respective scotch. You can mix and match even.

They do sell these waters albeit outrageously overpriced, but using mineral water should be a good enough substitute. You don't even have to use it in ice form, just add drops.

when it comes to ice in cocktails, dilution =/= chilling. warm scotch has to do a lot of work to break down ice into water and this takes a lot of heat out of it. it physically can't melt rocks, so that heat loss never happens.

if you want a drink that's not much colder than it was out of the bottle then go for it.

the best solution, in my eyes, is to drink it at the right speed for the amount and size of ice you're using. lots of small cubes? drink that shit fast. one big chunk? shake the drink a bit and take it slow.

the small amount of water that thaws actually makes the drink more palatable unless you specifically want the burn of neat whisky.

this thread will be full of people telling you what to do rather than how to do what you want to do. but the fact is that unless you really, above all, want neat whisky, you're best off using ice. and if you do really, above all, want neat whisky, but you want it cold, you might want to refrigerate it in advance.

an important part of the chilling efficacy of ice is that the state change between ice and water simply put it needs a relatively high amount of energy so there's a little buffer there where it is absorbing heat but the overall temp of the slurry/ cube surface is not increasing

For people who want to drink whiskey neat, and experience the flavour untarnished, let it sit in the glass for ten minutes or so before sipping. The fumes will have dissipated after that point, and it won't burn (at least not excessively) if it's a decent bottle.

Someone hasn't built up a tolerance yet. A lot of underageB& think 40% has an unpleasant burn, but enough practice will make a 59% cask strength barely register as a tickle.

Yes, blenders and distillers tasting for 8-10 hours a day water down their drams, no, it's not to protect the tongue or enhance flavor, it's to avoid getting sloshed at work, even with a spit bucket.

Drops? Anyway for single malts go try a Glenfiddich, easy to drink and rarely expensive. Then maybe try a Glenmorangie which is better and also not generally expensive. Speyburn is a cheapo single malt similar to Glenmorangie but often really really cheap and by no means bad. If you aren't put off by smoke and peat, you can often find Laphroaig for quite cheap, but you have to shop around to find decent deals. Single malts are indeed expensive these days but with a little effort you can find reasonable prices, and they really are just a lot more interesting than most blends.
