This

In France (and EU I guess) we have a brand like pic related that makes everything from batteries to grated cheese.

Last time I checked their veterinary code on foods, they were made in the same facilities than the supermarket's brand equivalent product.

Now, being made in the same plant doesn't mean they always use the same ingredients, or same quality grade of ingredients, but sometimes when you compare the contents and nutritional values they're copy paste of the generic brands.

The rated the quality by amount of durum used in production and how much residual pesticide there still is in the packaged food itself.
Can't remember what earned the highest marks, though.

Switzerland has semolina spätzle (grießmehl chnöpfli) that are made with semolina flour, plain flour and egg yolks but those are pretty costly. Many people make them at home because they're so easy to do. In the south, where're they're most common, they're called "passatelli," which is confusing because in Italy, 'passatelli' are made with breadcrumbs rather than flour or semolina, so they're basically bread dumplings.

I speak Deutschbag and understand about 80% of the vocabulary of most other Deutschbag-descended languages, so I'm gonna take a crack at this.
I can only guess what 'snabb' means (I would assume that it's cognate with 'snap' as in 'in a snap/instant' so 'snabb kaffee' might mean 'instant coffee') but the second item is obviously sugarcake.

This.

At one time PC was a discount brand, then they became a regular brand, then they became a premium brand.

You can still find products from PC that fill all three criteria, and it's all incredibly good stuff.. PC is pretty much the best brand we have because of that.

My uncle used to own a supermarket and showed me how this works. It's not the printing of the label, it's really in marketing and trademarks that costs money.

Sometimes, and it does depend on the supermarket, the brand label stuff is the exact same as the supermarket's own label stuff and there's no reason to just make a generic looking fallout shelter looking label either.

Again it depends on the supermarket and who's doing it, but it's likely the exact same stuff packed in the same plants with the same cans but just having different labels. It would actually cost a lot more to do a different production run just to use a different label but having inferior content.

That applies to a lot of stuff but not everything, it really depends on the specific company.

... Licensing of patented processes also costs a bundle. That's why printing labels really costs no differnece in the actual printing, the same printing presses are used.

Package designer here, willing to answer any questions people have about package design.

These minimally designed labels are fun to see, and usually happen in cycles. Packaging gets more complex visually as companies compete with each other, and somebody (oftentimes the main store) will swoop in with a totally clean one that stands out compared to the rest.

My favorite stuff tends to be the minimally designed packaging, but not so far that it is just color + text. It can be surprisingly difficult to keep it minimal, but good looking.

it's just like Superstore that has No Name and President's Choice

>> No.6715904

Great question.

It depends largely on the client. Larger clients stick to the FDA approved labeling for fear of having to recall should somebody get confused by it later. Much smaller companies (think food co-ops, local products and farmers markets) can usually get away with less rigid labeling.

It also depends on the product, which is why you don't see nutritional labeling on things like some beers, food prepared in stores or things people may prepare themselves in store (think peanut butter making machine or self serve areas).

TL;DR It varies a lot based on the product and size of the company making it, but generally gets more strict the larger you get.

We did a package for lemonade once that was just water, sugar and lemons. The name of the product was "Water, Sugar and Lemons" and we managed to get away with that and the fluid ounces, nothing else.

I speak German and Alemannic natively and English fluently as well as Dutch and Danish with some effort, so I understand enough of all other Germanic languages excepting Icelandic and Faroese to read wikipedia articles in those languages. I definitely think 'snabb' and 'snap' are cognates, then, if you use it to mean 'fast' in Swedish.
Was I right about the sugarcake/cake sugar? At first, I thought it was a ready-mix for making sugarcakes but then, thinking about it, thought it's more likely that it's icing/confectioner's sugar used to top cakes and making icings.
