Hi, I'm about to go to college and wondering if there is any good food (no rammenz) I can get on a freshman salary?

Beans (dried are most cost effective)
Lentils
Rice
Whole bulk spices
Canned tomatoes
Dark meat chicken, particularly legs and minimally processed thighs
Tough cuts of beef, chuck/flank

Shop at asian/middle eastern markets for better deals. Keep meat and dairy consumption to a minimum, those are always more $/weight than vegetables except when they're on sale. Stretch your meat purchases out with plenty of vegetables and starch instead of just eating it as the centerpiece of the meal with a few sides.

Rice, beans, and chicken.

I grill the chicken and brush it with barbecue sauce, but you could just as easily roast it with some rotisserie herbs.

For beans, dried is cheaper, but canned is still pretty cheap, and ready to eat. They come in all kinds of flavor.

For rice, just toss it into a rice cooker with a cube of bouillon.

Toppings and sauces: hot sauce, cilantro, lime, chopped onion, grilled or roasted peppers, salsa, etc.

Thanks, that actually doesn't sound too bad

Also don't get why people think cooking good food is gonna be so fucking expensive

Well its kinda just preparation, my sister went to college a couple years back and told me I would be going through some financial trouble so im just preparing for the worst

You shouldn't really worry unless your going to get high end ingredients witch is kinda dumb unless your going all out. I got through college fine with a wok and five dollars hell I even made it through basic and if I coulda brought my wok I damn well would of.

That's pretty cheap but just to state my own personal opinion, I prefer just the thigh or the drumstick rather than the whole leg and rice and beans/peas like in my picture (I dislike baked beans with rice). Then some cheap vegetables like cabbage.

You're right that it's easy to eat cheap without worrying about it but if you work hard to save even just 50c every meal, it adds up, and sometimes it's worth it.
