How do people use corn tortillas for tacos? Every time I use them they end up falling apart and making the whole meal a lot messier than it would've been if I had just used flour.

You're buying those really shitty corn tortillas like Mission, etc at the grocery store, aren't you?

>> No.6629081

>>6629069
I wrap a small stack of them in a wet paper towel and microwave for 30 seconds. They're not as crumbly and waxy that way. Then I use 2 at a time for tacos, put meat on top and sprinkle with cilantro, onion and hefty squeeze of lime

>> No.6629083

Use two tortillas, toast em a bit.

>> No.6629091 [DELETED]

go to your local mexican grocery store, buy cheap ass tortillas that were made that day

use two for each taco, and heat them up in a bit of oil to soften them.

>> No.6629093

>>6629069
Mexifag here: the kind of tortillas you get in that giant tortilla shelf at the grocery store are awful. They're way too thin and aren't pliable at all, even after being warmed properly. Tortilla Land tortillas are my favorite tortillas, and they're what I use at home ever since moving out of southern California (where you can just buy fresh-made tortillas at the Mexican grocery store), but those come raw, and I don't know if that's off-putting. Trader Joe's also has really good corn tortillas, with their "handmade" ones being better, but also more expensive.

Also, the regular supermarket tortillas tend to be white corn tortillas, which I don't like.

>> No.6629094

I think those kind are better made fresh and eaten immediately.

>> No.6629102

>>6629094
Agreed. If you can, try to buy fresh, handmade. You wouldn't think they're better but they are. They're so much better, I eat them plain. But if you're stuck with the mass produced ones, steaming or toasting helps. Or save them for migas.

Just make them yourself and you can control how thick they are.
All you need is some masa harina flour and water. That's it. Press them with the base of a big pot (I use a glass baking dish so I can watch it flatten out evenly), and that's it.
Easy as fuck, cheaper, much fresher, and probably less likely to crumble in your hand. Though I wouldn't know because I've never used store bought.

Fun, mostly unrelated fact: in Latin American Spanish, the phrase "haciendo tortillas" (making tortillas) is slang for lesbian sex.

I keep them in a little steamer in the bathroom next to the toilet. I set the steamer to "low" so that the tortillas are soft and damp like a warm steamed towel.

The soft white flour tortillas are so gentle on my ass, I can use six or seven while wiping and not get any sort of rash.

BAD IDEA ... just dont take the shortcuts /they suck
warm tortillas in an iron skillet, over a grill or a comal

>>6629081
>Then I use 2 at a time for tacos
maybe it could use two tortillas or maybe one is enough / it willl take time before you know if its a singe or double tortilla kind of taco
>>6629081
>put meat on top and sprinkle with cilantro, onion and hefty squeeze of lime
this unfortunately is not even a taco until you have the needed salsa ... add the salsa then feel free to call it a taco

>> No.6630496

Don't buy shitty tortillas. Go to a tortilleria, or make your own. Tortillas aren't meant to have a long shelf life, and they definitely aren't supposed to taste as shitty as those grocery store tortillas.

Also, you need to warm them in a pan first.

Honestly, tortillas are so easy to make with storebought masa that there's very little reason to buy them premade unless you have a tortilleria in the neighborhood.

Mission tortillas are still shitty, and you shouldn't feel good about using them. Do you just have something against flavor?

>> No.6630505

you need to heat them up a bit on the bbq before you use them.

taco tortillas are usually pretty small too, so try not to overload them or they may break up anyway.

I willing to bet you are using too much filling.

Tacos are supposed to be small and plentiful. A little bit of this and that in a tortilla, and you do that over and over again until you're full. You don't take two and stuff them to their limits.
