http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toast_sandwich
>A toast sandwich is a sandwich made by putting a thin slice of toast between two thin slices of bread with a layer of butter, and adding salt and pepper to taste. Its origins can be traced to the Victorian years. A recipe for making it is included in the 1861 Book of Household Management by Isabella Beeton

>The toast sandwich was named by the scientists of the Royal Society of Chemistry "Britain's cheapest lunchtime meal" in November 2011, with the cost cited as being as low as 7.5p per sandwich.[3] The Royal Society of Chemistry is offering £200 to whosoever can create a cheaper alternative.

Of course, there are always lots of Americans who will see one instance of something strange going on abroad and immediately assume it's prevalent in that society. Then they can enjoy stereotyping people from that nation as such in a spirit of patriotic superiority, as though nothing so silly could ever happen in their perfect USA.

I'm from a coastal town in northern England and can confirm this. I haven't seen newspaper anywhere near fish and chips since the 80s, and when it was it was always as an outer wrapping.

The food would be completely wrapped in a greaseproof paper bag, which was then wrapped in layers of newspaper to keep it warm until you got it home and could eat it on a plate with your own bread and condiments. That's if you weren't going to eat it straight out of the bag with a little two-pronged wooden fork on the promenade (pic related).

OBVIOUSLY nobody wrapped chips directly in contact with newspaper, the ink would come off with the grease and get all over the food. Who would buy that?

>he generalized

>> No.6481864

>>6481805
There's quite a difference between noticing typical behaviour common to one group of people and assuming that one single instance of something represents the lifestyle of tens of millions of people.

For example, it's dumb (when not obvious trolling) to say: "people get beheaded on the streets of England," since it happened approximately once in a hundred years, it was an extreme isolated incident. It's less dumb to say "people get shot on the streets of the USA," since it happens tens of thousands of times a year.

There is a clear tendency for Americans to make sweeping generalisations about populations of millions based on one single thing they saw reported in their hysterical news media. Far more so than any other country I've heard of anyway. You don't have to spend long talking to them on the internet or watch too many interviews, movies and shows from the USA to notice this. And amazingly, the usual justification for this lazy ignorance is that the USA is the only "relevant" country in the world. It's like a kind of collective solipsism. "I live in this society therefore only this society really matters to anyone."

I'm English and I went to America once, I was asked by Americans if I'd met the Queen. Some were surprised that I didn't speak like Hugh Grant.
