Yes, but that's already been taken into account when the calorie numbers are published for food.

You know the standard associations of 4 calories per gram for carbs and protein, vs. 9 calories/gram for fat? Those numbers don't come from some theoretical calculation. They were measured empirically by studying how the human body breaks down food. In reality the "true" caloric content of those foods would be much higher if you measured them with a calorimeter like you'd do in a science class. The numbers we use when discussing food calories take into account how the body digests those different foods. They are called Atwater factors. Google for more information.

I don't count calories. I just eat reasonable portions of healthy foods (lots of leafy veggies, onions, garlic, nuts, seeds, beans, some animal protein mainly seafood). It's not that abnormal. Eating provides a dopamine spike, people who are stressed are probably secreting cortisol, norepinephrine is raised, and histamine might be rising. Their dopamine levels are going to be driven down, and they'll over time subconsciously develop behaviors that even it out.

Unless people have been battered (psychologically) around until they've broken or been pushed too many times to count, they're shockingly bad at stomaching even the slightest prolonged or even short discomfort. Remember this, look around next time at others or even you yourself, you will begin to see.

If so, I recommend caution. I more or less half lived on beans for a while, and it trashed my digestive system. This was nearly two years ago and it hasn't been quite right since. If I get too stressed food will sit and literally rot in my stomach, HCl is never secreted, therefore pepsin is never functional and probably not even secreted itself. A lot of vinegar will do this. Lot of histamine will do this. Tomatoes will do this. Etc.

It's gotten better. Very possible I'm infected with H. Pylori and it became active, but I lack any other symptoms. I don't know, but I've yet to reconcile it in a true sense. Just be careful eating a lot of anything that is binding or rough on your digestion, over a long period of time. Cheeses and some types of complex carbohydrates seemingly included.

Counting calories works great. Figure out what you should have in a day, and try to get to that. If you're going for 0-500, then you are doing it wrong. You don't have to spend the rest of your life logging every tic-tac, but its good to figure out approximately what you should be eating in a day. You'll start to figure out how that family sized bag of oreos is more food than you need in two days, or that sometimes dessert isn't necessary.

I think of my caloric goal as a daily budget. If I have something big for breakfast or if I want to have dessert some night, I cut back somewhere else.

Some foods just don't seem worth it to me. Potatoes are great, but to taste good they need lots of fats--either butter, oil, or cheese. I've felt for a while now that they just aren't worth including in my diet. What do you do to eat potatoes and still stick to between 1200-2000 a day?

I try to eat about 1600 calories a day. I am 5'11", 195.

For the past three months I have counted calories and I do 45 minutes of cardio at least twice a week, ideally three times a week. I have lost 25 pounds since I started.

I firmly believe in calories in, calories out. Eat less, move more. I have never tried to lose weight before, ever, and I am pleased with my progress. You really can eat anything as long as you stay within the appropriate number of calories. I eat Wendy's a few times a week - but I get a chicken sandwich and that's it. And the only liquid I consume that contains calories is alcohol; I still drink bourbon regularly, but beet is a rare treat.

I feel good and it's nice to fit back into clothes I had "outgrown".
