Ever been to a Cracker Barrel?

There's one about 20 min north of me and I've been thinking about giving it a try. Can't get any good southern-style breakfast in new england so this could be my best option. But if it totally sucks then I won't go.

Opinions?

>> No.6406441

It is mediocre. If you like pancakes, shredded hashbrown casserole, bacon/sausage/eggs and all the normal stuff, it's okay. You can get different fruit toppings and stuff on your pancakes. The sausage when I had it was pretty dry and bland for some reason. Now if we were talking lunch/dinner..I like a lot of their entrees. The sides for everything are obviously made in large batches and kept warm and they scoop as it's ordered. But over all it isn't bad because their prices are decent and portions pretty big to where I always take a box home.

decent food big portions good candy

Overrated. I went once and was more impressed with the items in the gift shop.

I went there once with my ex fiance.
The food was alright, besides the fact there was one of those flat bread bag ties on the bottom of the bun, good thing I noticed it before I bit that part of the burger off...

Britbong here. Only went once on a skiing holiday in salt lake city. Best catfish i've ever eaten. Mac and cheese was pretty meh (sure its the kraft shit) but the steak fries reminded me of real chips.

This.

If you get excited about ridiculous "country" breakfasts and dinners like meatloaf or chicken and dumplings you might like it. If you're nostalgic for "country" cooking from the last century and don't know how to make any of that stuff yourself you might love it. To me it's just foodservice versions of dishes my grandmother either cooked or would have cooked if she'd grown up just a little further south. Not something I'd go out of my way for.

Definitely go. Get Momma's Pancake Breakfast. Come back and thank me later.

>> No.6408365

Get the veggie plate. Macaroni and cheese, fried okra, hash brown casserole. The cornbread muffins are also great.

>> No.6408374

I think it's pretty pricey. But when I want some "home" cooking, I go there with friends.

Pretty good food. Love the biscuits and corn bread; one time we asked for a couple to take home, and since it was sort of late at night, we got a bag of like 20 each; it was nuts. The chicken fried steak is fucking great too.

Also, their chilled mug cider makes me pee myself just a little bit each time I have it.

I wouldn't call it a standard of cooking or anything like that though.

Haven't eaten there since my girlfriend decided to homophobic to deserve our patronage (personally, I don't give a shit). Regardless, It's alright home cooking. I had better when I was a boy and I my grandmother's cooking most nights. And now that I can cook most of it for myself, I don't even miss it.

Their breakfast is decent. Pancakes, French Toast, eggs, crappy bacon and sausage, decent ham are your main options. Their dinners are where it's at, though. Huge portions, and decent prices. The catfish is surprisingly good, as is just about everything else I've had from there.

Give it a try, but don't get the breakfast.

Dunno where all this "hating" on CB is from...it's a staple of roadtrips. They are always off an interstate, and feature a nice restroom and snack+gifts little country store option, where you can find some old timey stuff, old brands of candy and root beer, and stuff. They tend to have great service with a smile, and if something is not right, it's fixed at the register or your next visit, no questions asked plus a ton of apologies. That's rare most places.

Protip on food:
Breakfast: Smoked am and red eye gravy, grits, biscuits n sawmill gravy. Eggs sunny side up.
Pecan pancakes or sourdough french toast. That's all there.
Lunch or dinner
4 veggie sampler: Top faves are fried okra, fried apples, turnip greens, black eyed peas, mashed with cream gravy, baked sweet potato.
Fried chicken livers, chicken fried steak w/gravy or the sampler of 3 meat choices: chicken n dumplin', smoked ham and meatloaf.
For a light lunch, they have cranberry chicken salad served with a salad and blueberry muffin. Like the country sampler which is a great price for a platter of food (planned leftovers), there is a daily blue plate kind of diner food special which is nice such as turkey and dressing thanksgiving style or chicken pot pie...different special each night.
Dessert, whatever cobbler floats your boat. Their vanilla a la mode is decent flecked with vanilla bean type. I never have room but the sundaes are also old fashioned.

p.s. don't play the golf tee jumping game on the table...imagine dirty fingers on it :P

You can get a lot of Cracker Barrel-type meals at a local diner, and they'll actually be homemade. It's also less likely to smell like the wistful nostalgia of overweight old people.

Cracker Barrel is mostly ok. Def better than Denny's or ihop or Perkins. However their pancakes are god tier unquestionably and the serve real maple syrup. I get it everytime I go.

I like them. It's not somewhere i'd consider "special", but i'm Appalachian and if i'm traveling sometimes I just want soup beans, greens, and cornbread. Seems like anyone can find something they'll enjoy, so it's good as a "family" place when you've got old folks along. Prices aren't bad either.
