the first really peaty scotch i ever had was at a whiskey tasting event. there was a flight of glenmorangie scotches, and the last one was ardberg Uigeadail (i guess they went in with ardberg on the batch or something).

the first sip i took was straight, and i about fell out of my chair it was so smokey. my eyes were watering.

then i put in a couple of drops of water. it took just enough of the initial razor blade of smoke that i could actually taste what was going on. i was really surprised at how much i enjoyed it.

i think laphroaig isn't quite as intense, and the water dulls the smoke down so much that it makes it taste too sweet. laphroaig neat is pretty tasty in my book.

Everyone and their mother is shitting bricks over Yamazaki now. (the limited edition Sherry Cask won Jim Murray's Whisky of the Year). It's almost boringly good.

Hakushu is punchier but it's hard for me to remember anything specifically besides LOLSMOKE.

Hibiki 12 is mellow, popular for mixing. I'd say it's alright. The plum wine casks give it an interesting note.

Never tried the Nikkas, so can't comment there.

Depends on your budget:

Since you're new I'd go with relatively inexpensive bottles or find a bar with a good selection and try several different whiskeys.

As for recommended bottles:

Elijah Craig Bourbon
Aberlour 12
Laphroaig 10 (heavily peated)
Balvenie 12

Additionally I like Bulliet Rye but my local shops have very little selection as far as rye goes so I don't really know how it stacks up against other ryes

Well you've started with 2 Speysides which is great because they tend to have an amalgamation of different stuff and what you specifically like about them can point you in what direction you should try next.
I'm gonna give you low cost entry level stuff so you can maybe go to a whisky bar and try a couple before you buy a bottle.

So firstly, like the spicyness in the arrival and finish of the Knockando? Take a trip to the highlands then, Old Pulteney 12 is a great value for the price that gives you a oaky warmth with a strong sherry presence guiding it to a citrus finish with a splash of brine.

Oh, you say you like the sweetness and vanilla and caramel notes dancing through the glenfiddich? Then take another try in Speyside with the honeyed Benriach 12 and enjoy the floral and fruity lightness.

Want something with that ease of drinking but that substitutes the fruity to do with a ginger backed nuttiness and crisp freshness? To the lowlands with the consistent Auchentoshan 12 for a wonderful everyday dram that is very easily agreeable although it won't blow anyone away.

Lastly, I'm sure you've heard of the peaty Islay whiskys. They can be a big shock coming from the Speysides so I'm gonna recommend what I used as a jumping off point, Coal Ila 12. Not overwhelming with peat but gives you that feeling of being at a bonfire at the beach on cool autumn nights, flecks of seawater hitting your tongue as sparks kiss your cheeks. Definitely not in the same league of peat as Ardbeg or Laphroaig or even Bunnahabhain but definitely a great ambassador for the region.

If you have any questions feel free to ask,
Master of malt is a good site to look up other candidates and do research on as well
