Beer thread:

What's the difference (in taste) between canned and bottled beer?

I've been drinking a lot of Guinness lately and I'm not sure which I like more, but the cans seem cheaper so I think I'm gonna roll with that.

But is there an actual taste difference? I don't believe the metallic bullshit, but I've sometimes heard that it comes down to: Bottles allow light to hit the beer but are more aesthetic so psychologically more enjoyable to drink... Though the light doesn't impact dark beers as much as it does light beers.

Anyone know?

They took the widgets out of the bottles, not sure if the cans still have them. No light is getting in a Naughtiness Drug bottle, they have that black wrapper. I like it all.

>> No.6243473

Dunno about in general but Guinness cans have the widget so it is superior to the bottle. Bottled guinness is for trying the alternative recipes. If you serve the 440ml cans over about 5 blocks of ice it will fill a pint glass, so looks like the pub version and tastes as smooth. I also like to chill it for 30 minutes in the freezer, Guinness is served extra cold.

I've not found a beer I preferred to Guinness yet. I like that it is dark, bitter, coffee and chocolate tasting, roasted grains tasting, foamy creamy and crisp. Belhaven Best is 2nd best since it has an even more hydrating feeling. I buy bottles if it is not guinness, not sure why, would love to hear evidence for cans being superior or equal.

If you're talking about Guinness, canned is preferred to bottled generally because of the widget. Doesn't really taste different as such but the texture is nicer.

Cans are superior to bottles in most cases but very few good beers come in cans. Drinking from the can is worse than drinking from a glass container be it a mug or a bottle. So I'd say buy your canned Guinness and pour it in a glass to drink it.

Next time you get bottled water pour it in a glass to drink it. The vessel changes the way you perceive taste quite a lot.
