Is it true that white onions continue to ripen to red if you leave them on the window edge? (inside)

I know it works with green tomatos and bell peppers, but my cousin said it and he is a joker sometimes?

red onion soaked in lemon juice, and a bit of salt -- YAAAASSSSS!!

>> No.6227933

Just the onion by itself, I like to leave out on a back porch in the sunlight. Peel the onion and slice and put the slices on the banister all day. At night, bring them in and leave them on the island. in the morning, put them out again for the whole day. At night, spinkle oregano, garlic salt, paprika, and onion powder on them and finish them in the oven at 300 degrees for about an hour.

My family loves them.

I'll eat a red one like an apple, not the yellow though.

I had raw red onion with marinated and grilled chicken with flatbread and garlic sauce for dinner. It was delicious. Yogurt with blueberries, honey sprinkled with toasted almonds for after. I love onion but I don't eat it like an apple. I also prefer my onions raw, unless I'm cooking spicy tomato sauce.

I love making pico with red instead of white. Red onions are so sweet and full.

Of course your breath is onions for hours later but eh worth it. Love love love onions.

No. Onions only can sprout greens on top, if you put them in water.

Are the green parts the same thing as green onions? They look pretty similar. I don't think so but just curious maybe I've been wrong all my life.

I get bad gas from raw onions and caramelized onions

not lightly sauteed ones or cooked ones though.

The green part is green onions. Literally the leaves of the onion plant compared to the bulb.

Botanically, its a same plant part, but from other relative cultivar (or specie, dunno). From culinary point of view I suppose it mosty the same thing.

so white onions will ripen through to red if you leave them in water?

>> No.6230220

>>6229226
Yep. Things that are sold as "green onions" are typically from a slightly different variety of onion bred to have better leaves, but green onions are just that bit of the onion plant.

No.

Green onions are a different species altogether. They aren't cut from the top of a normal onion; you can clearly see the roots at the base. Pic related. Green onions. See the roots? This is the whole plant pulled out of the ground; green onions are species in the genus Allium which have no bulb.

This.
I'm only 24, but I try never to eat raw onions.
I can always fry/sauté them and cook a ton of food.
My father likes to slice one and just add some salt and lemon juice (real nice, especially if you rinse it before. I don't do it now though).
