I've been to the one in San Diego twice. I could get the exact location if you want it, but for the time being, I'm too lazy.

I ordered the 2x2 animal style and the fries animal style. Basically what's in the picture.

Wait times were about 10 minutes or so. Place was packed. I went during the day, but I have no idea what time. It was after 11:00 AM. Same deal both times I went.

I think it is extremely generic in the most complimentary way. It's just a burger and fries done very uniformly and consistently. Ordering the food animal style gave it a little bit of uniqueness, but underneath all that, I had the very clear perception that this burger was as basic as it gets. They don't even use good Claussen pickles -- they have those Yellow #5 neon green pickles. I don't mind them, but Wendy's for fuck's sake has better pickles.

In-n-Out makes their own fries, and it gives it this homeyness that you don't get at a place like McDonald's and Wendy's. That said, McDonald's fries are over 9000x better. Wendy's has pretty awful fries. Burger King is somewhere in the middle. Five Guys has the worst fries of all time.

If I opened a burger joint, I would model it loosely on In-n-Out. Minimalistic menu and restaurant design, high public perception, (almost?) zero marketing except word of mouth, quality service, above-average employee wages and benefits, a family and Christian company (nb4 a million butthurt redditors), etc.

7/10 would eat again

I was was really disappointed when I tried In-n-Out in California. I'm Canadian and heard a lot about it (and love burgers), so I was pretty excited about it.

The burgers weren't anything to write home about - not bad of course, just pretty average. The fries were actually bad, just shitty frozen small fries with a bunch of processed cheese and toppings added to make them palatable.

The customization options are cool though, but they should get the base items up to par first. A good burger is always going to beat a mediocre burger animal style.

Really? Mediocre burgers which can be bested by spending $4 more at a real restaurant are why you visit the west coast?

lel, u jeal jeal? Seems Texans and other southerners hate Californians with a passion, meanwhile we don't even have an opinion about you. We actually don't care. It's like a fake rivalry where the losing team is furious that we don't acknowledge their existence.

Midwesterner here, I don't hate California in the least but the majority of the people I've met from there or lived there won't shut up about it and talk about where I live like it's the worst place ever. It's worse than the French company I used to work for (most of them were pretty cool but they definitely had a high opinion about their country).

I've never seen the point in bragging about that stuff so much myself. I've been a lot of places and they all have their pros and cons.

I live in Texas, had In and Out in Austin once. Went with family around 9pm on a friday. SXSW was in town, and the line was pretty long for the property. Order got taken down pretty fast because they had those guys with ipads taking care of the queue. By the time we got the food it was lukewarm.

Still tasted good though. Soon I'll go on a road trip to visit someone, and while I'm there get some more hopefully receiving the food fresh

Califag here. I have family in TX and they said the same thing about in n out. Someone told me that apparently one of the reasons it's so praised here is because they have an awesome infrastructure for their supply chains and none of their ingredients travel very far from supplier to restaurant. In texas they have far less and the food has to travel a lot further, resulting in less fresh product.

I'd have to try some from Texas to really see but seems like a reasonable explanation. I'd just get some whataburger if I was there anyways, as someone raised on in n out that shit was a fucking treat. I'm surprised it doesn't have as cult-like a following as in n out does.

It most certainly does.

In my book Whataburger is the greatest large scale chain for burgers. There will always be better local joints, but you cannot go wrong with whataburger.

I have one of the table tents rolling around in my Bronco right now.
