There are too many fantastic bourbons to list.

As an everyday bourbon, I love Wild Turkey 101.

As a once in a while treat, Blanton's is good, and Stagg Jr. is great.

Bulleit Rye and Eagle Rare are my go-to's. Blanton's is good but not worth the price.

As far as American whiskey that isn't JD or Jim Beam goes, I have had Wild Turkey 101, Rittenhouse Rye, and Buffalo Trace, and maybe I just don't like bourbon, but something about it makes me sick. I liked the Wild Turkey 101, but I hates the Rittenhouse and I didn't really like the Buffalo Trace either. I mean, they were awesome for the purpose of getting drunk, but I could never sit down and appreciate any of them for them for their taste.

I don't know, I started drinking Scotch at the same time I started drinking bourbon and I like Scotch better, I am not trying to be pretentious, that is just how it turned out.

Rye whiskey, bourbon is too sweet

Redemption Barrel Proof
Whistle Pig

I want to try Whistle Pig, but can't get over the combination of the price tag and the fact that it's rebranded Canadian whisky.

I'd highly suggest Colonel E.H. Taylor's Straight Rye whiskey.

The bottled in bond thing is now just basically a novelty, but it's reassuring compared to the sketchy shit distilleries are doing now (i.e. a whole slew of bottlings come from the same source and there's very little difference between a $20 bottle of whiskey and a $50 bottle)

>I'd highly suggest Colonel E.H. Taylor's Straight Rye whiskey.
A bottle of it literally sitting right next to my laptop screen this very moment.
...just took a sip to remind myself what it's like.

Yes, it's an ok rye, it doesn't have everything I look for, for a cheaper rye I'd say go with Jefferson's.
Also I feel like Taylor is overpriced for what you get, I can get Whistle for only $65 where I shop and consider the extra cost worth it.

Still good to see another fellow rye drinker and appreciator out there, if you're ever in the SF Bay Area we should meet, I generally keep a variety of rye on hand, or at the very least you should visit Rye in SF.

What does everybody think of Buffalo Trace? I don't really like it all that much. It has got all the typical bourbon flavors but more than anything I am tasting butterscotch and spices- really it reminds me of this one rum I can't remember the name of right now. I mean obviously it doesn't taste like rum, but the sheer butterscotch/spices taste is the same. In a very specific mood I can enjoy it but outside of that I can only drink it quick to get drunk quick.

It used to be really good, and it only cost $20. Now it's ~$30 and bitter.

They killed it because they couldn't keep up with demand.

Pic related is great. So is Bulleit Rye and Blanton's, but Blanton's isn't worth the price of $50. Bulleit Rye is $35 I think, and it was excellent.

>> No.6052067

um, but where are the power rankings?

>> No.6052138

>>6052066
Yeah, I payed about $30 for it. The thing is even though I don't like it that much, on the positive side, it is really smooth, minimal burn, and it is definitely really flavorful, but even so I don't care for it all that much. At $30 I guess I can't really complain, it is drinkable. Not nearly as drinkable as the scotch I have been buying recently, but price inflation and importation aside, even if I am paying between $40 and 60 for a 10/12 yo I feel like it is a better deal on enjoyment factor alone.

Eagle Rare and Bulleit are definitely at the top of my list of american whiskey to try, maybe next time.

Personally, I think of Buffalo Trace as an improved (more complex, not overwhelmingly sweet) Makers Mark. I can't say I've ever found it particularly bitter, but I haven't bought any of it in the last year or so. Good enough to drink for sure (especially when it was/is cheap), but nothing really special.

The last Bourbon of special note I drink recently was pic related. It was good, but not $50 good - very smooth (especially considering it's only aged 2 years), but the flavor was so mellow and short-lived that it was kinda boring.

Damn, that's a shame. Eagle rare used to be one of my favorite mid-good tiers(though haven't had it for a while). Hell it was simply one of my favorite whiskeys to drink period. That Bookers, Basil Hayden, and Redemption(for a little cheaper deal) always do the job quite well.

Also, where's the pappy elitism? The fucking 23 year is ridiculous(in price and flavor.) I personally haven't had any better, but I'm sure there is some bourbon out there that can compete.

You don't have to spend that much to drink an expensive bourbon. Weller 7 Year will easily convince a "bourbon taster" in a blind test. Even better, Old Grand Dad is just straight up cheap but still good.

Can't really say for sure what I'm looking for in a spirit, only whisky I've had is Johnny Walker Black Label and Fireball, the latter is no longer going to be an option for a plethora of reasons

Well, a decent starter selection for bourbon whiskey is going to be
>Maker's Mark
>Bulleit
>Buffalo Trace

After tasting from there you figure out if you like high-rye, low rye, or wheated, and then you start hemorrhaging money.

If you were looking at Scotch then I'd go
>Glenmorangie 10 (Highland)
>Balvenie Doublewood 12 (Sherried Speyside)
>Lagavulin 16 (Islay)
This gives you the widest assortment of flavors and styles at fairly minimal cost. Note the region your favorite of the three is from and start buying more from that region. Enjoy your empty wallet.

That's happening to a lot of whiskey, both here and in Scotland. The demand is seriously high right now compared to the supply so producers are cutting corners to churn out more product and raising prices at the same time. It's hard to name a whiskey off the top of my head that hasn't gotten both worse and more expensive over the last ten years or so, outside of perhaps the very small batch offerings where scarcity has always been part of their deal.

>> No.6053912

I know what you are saying is 100% true about most of the older/big name distilleries. What about the breweries that stress the whole "craft presentation" and all that? And what about the smaller, less old ones? Off the top of my head there is Springbank, Tobermory/Ledaig apparently is 100% better than before, Edradour, Bruichladdi, Kilchoman, Balblair and others I am forgetting. They all seem to be producing high quality stiff.
