If you could choose one item from the US what would you considser as a must have?
A friend of mine is staying in the US right now and will return to europe in january.

I am going to ask him for some edible stuff fdom the US but I'm not what to ask for - I had a decent BBQ sauce (maybe Stubbs) and some junk food (one of those one pound Reese Cupcakes) in mind.

Any recommendations? Too bad he can't get me a big bag of burgers from Five Guys or In N Out.
Thats actually something I lust for.

Most American candy is iffy at best, but Reese's cups are something special; far tastier than they ought to be. Take 5 and 100 Grand are also good; I can't think of much else that stands out though.

Barbecue sauce is definitely a good choice but I'd recommend finding some kind of artisan, locally made brand instead of the big labels. Bullseye, Stubbs, Sweet Baby Rays, etc. aren't bad per se, but they're not as good as the craft sauces. What kind of sauces your friend will find, however, depends significantly on exactly where they'll be.

lawl, "reese cupcakes"

OP, does your friend have any method of freezing or refrigerating these goods? Or just non-perishable items? We could make this interesting...

Where in the US is your friend staying? There are local specialties that may travel well, for instance there's Garret's popcorn in Chicago (pretty limited shelf life but should be okay for a plane ride) and salt water taffy in New England.

I think the big Reeses taste different from the smaller ones personally. It's still "Reeses" but it's not the full experience. My favorites are the holiday ones personally. Just get a shitton of Reeses so you can taste the difference.

I agree with Anon's suggestion of Take 5, and I think that Sweet Baby Ray's is a good barbeque sauce, though a locally made one would most likely be better.

Have you thought about asking for chips (crisps in britbong) or some snack foods like that? Cheetos, Doritos, Pringles, Lay's has crazy flavours like Cheesy Garlic Bread and Sriracha. Utz cheese curls (if your friend is in the Maryland area) taste like crack cocaine in my humble opinion.

There are also a lot of Christmas-themed items to be had this time of year, so take advantage of that.

The best advice though, would be to do a search on local non-perishables so you can be better informed than what /ck/ has to offer.

Happy eatings!

Cold cereals, candy, chips, bakery items, cookies, other snacks...

The LA area has a lot of local hipster shit, I'm sure your friend could find special chocolate (cannabis infused or otherwise, which should make it to your country because it's just candy officer) and other special non-perishables.

My main advice for OP is to keep in mind that America has a very mixed history when it comes to food. Historically, with some exceptions such as Cajun cuisine, that relationship tends to be negative. Processed cheese, mediocre chocolate, etc.

That said there are some gems, and the situation is improving, but you have to know where to look. So look for locally made craft items. I'm no locavore (econ 101 is enough to realize that it's retarded) but the local, custom artisans are where you'll tend to find the really good stuff. So don't be afraid to tell your friend to adventure a bit.

If you like mustard, there's a famous old deli downtown called Philippe's that sells jars of its kickass deli mustard. And it'll be worth the trip for your friend too if he hasn't been there, the French dip sandwiches are amazing. Fuck, now I'm hungry.

It's also across the street from Union Station, so I think he should be able to get there easily via Metrolink if he's at Cal State LA. Olvera Street (another historic tourist spot) is also right there.

Unfortunately I don't know what local BBQ sauces are around... I also don't know if a local product would be as shelf-stable as the mass-produced stuff, so make sure your friend gets something that doesn't need to be refrigerated.

Personally I like Reese's Pieces way more than the actual peanut butter cups, but I guess that's a matter of preference.

This is the absolute best kind of BBQ sauce you can buy, there is no contender. The White Lightnin' XXX is my favorite, but it's not the hottest. It's just damn delicious.

Britbong currently living in US. Barbeque sauce is generally good, as well as hot sauce.
Generally, I'd go for candy over chocolate, unless you're opposite to me and love peanut butter whilst hating grape. Avoid Hershy's and its vomit-flavoured products like the plague, though.
I'm a convert to proper jerky from the butchers, now, as well as toaster strudel and cinnamon rolls.
