If you live in Murrca, call your local Aldi and ask them if they still have the electric pressure cooker for sale from the 28th September circular. If not, ask them which other Aldi stores in the area might have it. You might have to ask for a local distribution centre's number to get that info.
They can also order one for you to the store if they don't have any.
I bought one last year and it's the best damned rice cooker I've ever had. Ever.

If you are not living in abject poverty and you make rice every day, there is really no reason to get anything else but a zojirushi

The only question is which model

Most people are fine with the standard fuzzy logic ones. If you want to get fancy, the induction ones are really nice but only necessary if you want GABA rice.

I saw a couple in flyover land last time I drove across it.

I haven't seen one in a city before

I think they exist to cater to rural poors

I was thinking of getting a zojirushi but I really don't know that much about them. Might as well buy a good one if I'm spending that kind of money.

I live in NY and have no idea where aldi is. I think it's more of a midwest thing?

>>5855097

fuck, I wish them had them here because I bet I'm a lot more poor than rural people considering the stupid fucking cost of living

I don't understand, are you suggesting that zojirushi is an obscure brand?

There's one in Harlem and another in Rego Park as well as likely others in and around NY.

no. I just don't know what the best model is.

It barely matters, they manufacture their latest and most expensive models in Japan, and the older models get offshored to China factories. The quality is fine in both cases, it's just a question of what features you want, and how much rice you need to be able to make at once.

Most of the models between about $90 and $180 are roughly the same other than size and cosmetics.

I have an NS-LAC05 I bought at J&R on Park Row, but if you live out in Queens or something you could probably find about a dozen stores in Flushing with a huge selection.

Sheepshead Bay, too.
In fact, there are over 20 in NY. Odd, that.

Can I ask, what's the benefit of using a rice cooker?

I've never understood why they're used, are they good for a certain method of cooking rice or something?

oops, looks like J&R went out of business

As you probably know, rice is basically done when the water runs out. If you don't turn off the heat it burns. Since this is only roughly tied to time, you have to make sure you're near the stove around the last few minutes of cooking.

Having a rice cooker means you can be in the next room doing something else and not watching the clock. It also takes up one less spot on the stove.

It doesn't sound like much to white people who eat rice twice a month, but for any simple task you do in the exact same way one or twice a day 365 days a year, it's stupid not to automate it.

Also, the better ones have porridge cycles and brown rice cycles and timers so that the stuff is done the second you get home from work.

Set it and forget it. Many also double as slow cookers or have other functions as well. Much to some people's chagrin (I'll explain in a sec), it's impossible to burn rice in a good rice cooker.
Chagrin because scorched rice is useful in many Asian cuisines spanning from west Asia (Middle East and the Caucasus) all the way to and through East Asia.
Pic related is one such use of scorched rice in Chinese cuisine.

Every Lao household where both husband and wife work, even in Laos, will have a rice cooker because Lao rice takes a few hours to soak before cooking. As such, in the morning, before leaving for work, someone will wash the rice and leave it to soak in the rice cooker for when they come from work. Some Lao abroad prefer rice cookers with timer features so the rice will be hot and ready when they walk in through the door. Others don't mind just turning it on after coming in.

Many Japanese do the same thing because Japanese and Lao strains of rice are very similar and benefit from a long soak and little water.

That sounds damn handy, I dislike cooking rice purely for the reasons you said.
Time to get a rice cooker.
