So, unlike in the U.S. where tipping is an entitlement, I found out that in Asia tipping actually works.

If anyone remembers, about a month ago I was bitching about how tipping doesn't really exist here, and how it meant I couldn't punish some utterly shitty service at another place. Nice to know that positive rewards mean really good service, at least.

Tipping sort of depends on the type of restaurant in Japan. If you got to those cheaper places they'll refuse to take tips and even be bothered when you leave it. High class dinner places probably are okay with it.

When I told her it was a tip she looked confused. I mean it's not really part of the culture. I actually like that Asian cultures take their work seriously despite knowing they won't be tipped. Not all restaurants had good service mind you but at least I don't have to slap down money out of guilt like I do here.

I was visiting a friend in china a few years ago and took one of those carriage things for fun, where they have someone run you somewhere.

Well I tried to tip the the girl $10 because shit is a lot of work, and was feeling nice about it, but she absolutely refused so I shrugged it off until i met up with my friend. How he explained it was that if she were to show up with a tip, it would make her "superior" to the other workers and she would just get shit on by the other workers for being a suckup.
