Why is cleaning a cast iron skillet with soap so bad? I scrub it every night with soap and steel wool and then run it through the dishwasher for good measure and I've never had any problems with it. Is it supposed to have some kind of long-term undesirable effects on the iron?

yeah i don't really get it either. people say it's because it degrades the season, but i don't taste any difference in the food. i guess the seasoning doesn't really affect food's taste like people say

I've never noticed a difference. Maybe you have a sensitive bitch palate.

The seasoning isn't supposed to make the food taste different. It's a nonstick coating that also protects the skillet from moisture and corrosion.

why would you call it seasoning then?

Is it a problem that I cook everything in vegetable oil then?

It's not a problem, but it isn't really necessary to use a large amount of oil if you're using a well seasoned pan.
