If you're watching mangos you can pick something that's fallen if it's reasonably fresh and in good condition.

My family used to have a couple of trees, and before I came to clapistan basically every vendor would get locally grown stuff so preservation issues weren't really common. I've never seen anything like what the OP's got so odds are it's something that only happens if you're getting them shipped in from really long ways away.

The best cider apples are the ones from the ground. That's how most hard cider used to be made, they just picked up the fallen apples which were the most ripe and had the most sugars.

>you don't touch the wind fallen apples because you don't want to contaminate the cider with unwanted yeast and bacteria

Honest question here. Are the fallen apples really any different in that regard? I mean, it's not as if the ones hanging from the tree are sterile. Unless an apple fell into mud or dogshit or something I don't see how they would have any different yeast or bacteria on them than the ones on the tree? Is there a legitimate, repeatable, way to check what strains of what are on the apples or is this just an old wives tale aka tradition"
