Peanut-butter. What's better, crunchy or smooth, the normal stuff or the one with the oil on top you have to keep refrigerated?

>> No.5592645

The best peanut butter is the one you like most.

I personally like the honey roasted peanut butter that you grind fresh in store.

Smooth. Never did enjoy crunchy peanut butter.

But I also can't eat peanut butter by itself on a sandwich. It needs to be PBJ or nothing.

Natural crunchy. Keep the jar upside down so the oil makes it way through the bottom of the jar. 1/2 hour before using it flip the jar so the oil makes its way to the top again.

Santa Cruz, California.

We have it in almost all our large markets here, not just hippy markets or anything.

It's significantly better tasting than any other peanut butter I've had, I've always liked peanut butter but had no idea it could taste this good. I can't emphasize enough how good it is compared to any of the jarred stuff.

There's probably some hippy market near you that has it. It tends to be annoyingly expensive but it's at least worth trying.

As far as I know the only peanut butter you need to refrigerate is the kind with oil and that's really just to prevent separation. As far as I know it won't really culture anything if you don't refrigerate it.

My preferred is Smucker's crunchy peanut butter, which has just peanuts and salt. I had to buy jif recently out of necessity, it's sweetened and to me just tastes awful. I can sit and eat Smucker's straight out of the jar if I want, but no way in hell can I do that with Jif.

The emulsifier they add to "normal" peanut butter to keep it from separating at room temperature changes the taste a lot. I like the "natural", just peanuts and maybe oil in the ingredients.

You don't have to keep it refrigerated, but if you keep it at room temperature you will have to stir it every day. My wife hates cold peanut butter so we keep it out.

The Fred Meyer near my house has a fresh-grind dispenser for natural peanut butter, and it's only $2.50/lb, which is cheaper than Adams and pretty much the same as the generic emulsified brands.

>> No.5597346

>>5592778
Most have peanuts and salt, plus an emulsifier to keep it from separating, plus a sweetener to cover up the emulsifier, and maybe some kind of oil as well.

Anything without an emulsifier is marketed as "natural" and usually doesn't have anything but peanuts, maybe oil, maybe salt.

Then there's sweetened/flavored ones that are marketed as kids foods, like >>5592809 which looks like one of the "Smuckers Goobers" varieties. They dump a bunch of fruity sweeteners in it, and then the requisite preservatives and stabilizers to support those sweeteners, and then add some vitamins as well to pad the nutritional label and make mom think it's good for the kid to be feeding them a sugar-paste because look at all the vitamins and minerals!

>> No.5597351

What are you mixing it with? I see a lot of people try and stir it with a spoon and that just fucking doesn't work. Use a knife or some sort of narrow paddle. You basically just have to cut the oil into it. Keep it upside down in storage before you open it and it will make your job easier, too.

I use a thick butter knife to mix it. Just can't be arsed to mix it all the damn time. Prior to this, didn't know stuffing it in the fridge would help. Peanut butter is usually a cheap fast way to make a sandwich so you can go about your day.. It's too much work with organic peanut butter. Though I think it was a mistake on my behalf to buy that giant jug of peanut butter from Costco, took forever to mix it up!
