As someone who grew up with poor parents, I ended up being a health freak once I moved out. I'm still kind of appalled my parents would feed their kids that kind of stuff. A lot of our regular meals were:

>hamburger helper
>shake and bake supermarket chicken/pork chops
>spaghetti
>hot dogs
>frozen pizza

Lots of sugary cereal and ramen/low quality lunch meat for breakfast and lunch. I also remember our family using white bread and the only time we ate "vegetables" is when it was overmicrowaved corn with margarine or instant mashed potatoes.

She switched over to turkey lunchmeat and lowfat dairy products a while ago because she's concerned for her family's health. She feeds her kids applesauce.

The only indications she has that she's fallen out of the middle class is the used car she drives and the loans her kids will have to (hopefully) get through college. And the cost of the asthma meds for half the fucking family.

Wonderbread is absolutely white trash. Second only to Sunbeam, probably. Cool whip is white trash too. People keep it in the freezer and eat it like ice cream. How does jell-o cost alot? It costs cents.

Bottled BBQ sauce is a pretty stupid one to include but I think that anon was thinking more about "a bottle of BBQ being used as a table condiment."

If you don't think A1 steak sauce is white trash, I'm not sure what to say to you. Think about what some white trash thinks is a fancy meal. It's going to be a hamburger steak slathered in A1. With cool whip for desert.

This so much. I think a lot of people have a hard time being frugal. It'll help in the long run. I've had friends who instead of buying beans and rice and buying veggies on sale or being smart with their money, they'll spend $11 at a fast-food chain for one meal when they can spend pennies and save the difference. Meanwhile I wouldn't spend $6 on Starbucks or fast-food and other stuff but instead saved my money. Every once in a while having a tiny splurge is fine but spending tons of money every day when you don't have to and can't afford it is just insanity.

There is these spaghetti dishes you can buy in Lidl. Can't remember the name of the brand, but it's essentially a pack of spaghetti, tomatosauce and parmesan cheese, and the other one is spaghetti with a herb-cheese sauce. They were always on sale when I studied, and one pack was about three meals for me. My economy was as tight as a jews vallet, so for five years I lived off this shit, at least five meals a week. I also bought those frozen vegetable mix bags. And once in a blue moon I would save up for a proper meal, with fresh produce.

It was god damn hard to live off that shit, but it was also so cheap. Even now, five years later, I can't eat those meals. Just the thought of them makes me gag. But to me, they are the epitomy of white trash because I saw so many white trash looking people hoard them just as much as I did.

My dad was/is a great cook, I really shouldn't have turned down all the good food he made because he actually cared; but I only ate the shit food my mom made for years on years so it was what I liked. Once I started to give a shit I realized how bad it all is and I can never go back.

Where did the idea that fast food is cheap come from?

Cause I mean like... sure you can go to taco bell or mcds and spend a fiver and get atleast a burger/burrito and a drink but it isn't really that filling and will only last you one meal. At the store you could buy a package of chicken breasts for 4-6 bucks and get 2-3 breasts and make that last for atleast 1-2 days (if you eat a half a breast per lunch and dinner).

I feel like these people that think fast food is cheap are being rused into thinking so. They'll likely end up spending way more on "cheap" fast food then had they just bought simple and very basic ingredients at the store.

>> No.5543481

>>5543469

fuck, if you're trying to be frugal, then why would you consider chicken breast? that's the most expensive part of the bird. for $5-6 you can get yourself a whole chicken and go even longer than 1-2 days.

But yeah, your point is still valid--cooking for yourself, even buying relatively expensive things like meats, is much more economical than fast food.

That's ridiculously common around here because it's the "cheap" way to make spiedies. Because I guess Italian dressing is cheaper than spiedie marinade.
As an aside, I used to work for a gas station/deli chain and that's exactly what we did with our chicken spiedie meat. We didn't even properly marinate it. Just drowned it in Italian and put it in the hot pans.

My general rule is this: if someone has too many instant/premade/boxed/jarred whatever of food that's easy to make at home (instant mashed potatoes, shit like frozen pizza, frozen meals in general), they're poor and have bad taste.
