Don't forget dairy and heavily processed grains. I mean, look at the thinnest countries like Japan and south Korea. They eat many vegetables and fresh foods while meat is something like a condiment, and they are able to walk everywhere.

I notice the most obese places in the USA are areas where people can't walk to their local markets, or restaurants.

Another thing too is how big American portion sizes are. If you go out to eat you risk eating 5 servings of food just for a lunch or dinner. People seem to be clueless about how many calories are in something like that.

Most obesity is attributable to habits and behaviors. Eating too much, being sedentary (a walk after dinner is something I try to do whenever possible), poor food choice etc.

But in terms of ingredients, the whole 'added sugars' category has been pretty elementary in the epidemic, and a lot of our grain choices -white bread the best example- are processed in to such 'easy' carbs that I frankly count them the same as added sugar. 'Easy' carbs meaning that your body has to expend very little energy to digest and absorb them, and there is nothing else 'attached' to them (ie, the protein of the whole grain, fiber, etc) so you are getting a disproportionate amount of nothing but easy, simple carbohydrate.

The good news is, people are finally starting to move from Wonder Bread (which was actually advertised as healthy, back in the day, imagine that...) to higher quality breads with whole grains, nuts and seeds, etc. My favorite bread is Dave's Bread.

Sorry for the diatribe. I've written a lot of essays on this very subject and it's something I'm pretty impassioned about...

>Sweden has become the first Western nation to develop national dietary guidelines that reject the popular low-fat diet dogma in favor of low-carb high-fat nutrition advice.

>The switch in dietary advice followed the publication of a two-year study by the independentSwedish Council on Health Technology Assessment. The committee reviewed 16,000 studies published through May 31, 2013.

>Swedish doctor, Andreas Eenfeldt, who runs the most popular health blog in Scandinavia (DietDoctor.com) published some of the highlights of this study in English:

>Health markers will improve on a low-carbohydrate diet:

>…a greater increase in HDL cholesterol (“the good cholesterol”) without having any adverse affects on LDL cholesterol (“the bad cholesterol”). This applies to both the moderate low-carbohydrate intake of less than 40 percent of the total energy intake, as well as to the stricter low-carbohydrate diet, where carbohydrate intake is less than 20 percent of the total energy intake. In addition, the stricter low-carbohydrate diet will lead to improved glucose levels for individuals with obesity and diabetes, and to marginally decreased levels of triglycerides.” (Source.)

The information that Sweden has guidelines on low-carb-high-fat diets is based on incorrect information circulating on the Internet.”
>As it turns out, reporters had mistaken a review published by the Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment (SBU) in September for new national guidelines. Måns Rosén, PhD, executive director at SBU, was anxious to squelch the rumors. “First, I would like to stress that we do not do guidelines, only systematic reviews and health technology assessment reports,” he says. “Second, we have earlier focused on patients with diabetes and now obese persons, not the general population.”

'Fraid not, friend. Asia and Africa are simultaneously known for having the highest carb intake as a percent of calories and for having the thinnest people. You can see Okinawa here, 85% carbohydrate (mostly from sweet potato rather than white rice like the rest of Japan), and famous for having more centenarians than anywhere else in the world. High carbohydrate intake isn't indicative of anything; every nation eats a high-carb diet because that's what humans eat. While there are good and bad sources of carbohydrate, the percentage of calories coming from carb doesn't seem indicative of anything related to obesity.

This means people ate differently 50-75 years ago, and good genes. To correlate that with the quality of the current Japanese diet is low level thinking. If anything accounts for the quality of japanese diets, there is more evidence for calorie restriction leading to longevity than anything else they do. The theories on why controlled caloric restriction matter center are metabolic changes that are cell protective.

Overeating.

It's not generally the quality of food that gets people fat, it's the amount. What obese people don't understand is that the body only needs a certain amount of calories to be satisfied and function, and if you're overeating you're only doing it because you feel used to eating more.

Servicemen ages 18-30 burn 4200 calories a day and that's with 3 course meals of around 1200 calories each.

Obese people triple that caloric intake per meal and burn nothing because they do not exercise.

It does not really matter what you eat, if you eat a ton of food, intake a lot of calories, then proceed to do nothing but store those calories you'll get obese.

This is true, but it should be pointed out that overeating on some foods are easier than other foods. It's hard to over-eat on unrefined grains, beans, vegetables, even fruit for the most part. They aren't particularly calorie dense, they take up a large volume in your stomach, and they have a lot of fiber. So you see, it CAN be about the quality of food as well.

Diet soda. Actually, a lot of low/no calorie sweeteners may not register in a caloric burn test, but many of them were downright fraudulent. A good example is Splenda/Sucralose. It's a sucrose (sugar) molecule attached to a chlorine molecule, in a caloric test, it doesn't burn, and registers as a 0-calorie content. However, exposed to acids it splits back into regular sucrose (sugar) and chlorine molecules. The danger with that is that not only is the user still getting regular sugar in digestion, but increased chlorine levels can cause other chemical reactions that result in the death of beneficial bacteria in the gut. This is just one example, there's other similar problems with Monkfruit extracts, stevia, and definitely the phenylalanine-bearing aspartame. Truthfully, these only fool a caloric test, they ignore all other body chemistry and interactions, and in many cases are much more harmful, and fat inducing, than regular sugars -- especially when you figure in consumerism and the inability of people to show restraint consuming such beverages.

In the US, people think you either need to eat a lot of meat/dairy, eat a lot of refined grains, or eat a lot of both. I've had a couple good ones and some close almost deadly ones. My ankles and knees hurt all the time and I'm only 30, I have a scare on my head that looks like my skull is smashed in, I've had arthritis in my fingers since I was 23, but I'm the happiest most content person you will ever meet and I've done more stuff for a living then most people will do in their entire life.

Instead of lifting weights at the gym you could build a barn without power tools. Instead of walking after a meal you could hike through the woods looking for meat animals. It bothers me that people work at nothing for the sake of loosing weight when they could work at something and increase their efficiency.

Not a redneck, for one.

>Hike through woods looking for meat animals

Once again, not a redneck and don't live in rural America nor do I care

>sake of losing weight

Your perception on fitness is warped, m8.

>increasing their efficiency

And you think that being tired all day and lacking the energy to multitask is better? Because being /fit/ gives you the energy to do a lot of shit you thought you wouldn't be able to do, no fucking joke

I invite you to read our sticky and if the gym isn't for you, then stick to your barn and homemade equipment

Foods aren't really responsible for obesity. It's an overconsumption of calories and lack of exercise that leads to obesity

The obesity epidemic is due to science. All those shekels spent on finding what combinations of chemicals light up certain areas of the brain didn't go to waste. Making and keeping stupid people obese was the goal all along.

All foods contribute to obesity because a caloric surplus. But if i were to choose i would have to say sugary drinks/foods because people underestimate how much calories is in one cup of soda. They could be drinking like 300 calories worth of soda.

You either live in the city or suburbs like a normal, regular, modern American or you live in the rural areas like a redneck. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

honestly, activity. Its easy to just eat anything and not do much. But comparitively we now know on the flip side olympic atheletes and bulkers can eat absolutely anything and everything they get their hands on just to maintain their power levels.

I love those microwave flatbread pizzas. But having them several times a week, with only my movement at work being my excersize was putting on a bit of pudge. I just started walking 15-30 minutes a day a couple times a week and the pudge went away and I could still eat my damn flatbread pizzas.

Let your damn kid eat cake after every meal, but only if you force him to go outside and play for an hour a day instead of sitting in front of the xbox all day

Tons of sugar and tons of food with tons of sugar in it.

And yes, it's sugar. Not muh cornsyrup, but anything with lots of fructose in it. You're not getting any thinner by drinking soda sweetened with cane sugar.

Eastern Euros drink a ton of beer compared to the US and they aren't very fat.

>> No.5550828

Sugars, fats, and to a lesser extent carbs are cheap in developed countries. People can eat tons of calories in these things really quickly and easily. They're also somewhat addictive. All those things combined is why all developed countries are getting more obese.

Some of it tastes awful. Not that it's not better to drink water, just saying.

Diet coke, for example, tastes like shit. I like coke zero though.

I make my own medium 10 inch pizzas with pepperoni and sausage about 3 times a week and i have been losing about 1-2 lbs of fat a week. I only do about 15 minutes of cardio every other day i just eat 500 calories under my maintenance calories. I stopped the little cardio i was doing and i was still losing about 1 lb a week eating the same.
