I have become such a regular customer at my favorite bar and grill that I never pay more than half price for anything.
Over the years I have done enough favors for the staff and owners that all my drinks are pretty much free.

Yep. Most clerks at a bunch of small shops in Monterey, CA knew me on a first name basis--I went to a coffee shop called Plumes almost every damn day for a month to buy 1$ coffee with the intent of getting those regular customer benz...it worked, and more often than not I was treated to free coffee/tea/pastries.

The guy who worked at the tobacco shop down there knew me well, as well. I'd get free cigarettes and good liquor in exchange for conversation about the military, marriage, UFOs, whatever.

Hmm...oh and a pizza place there as well had a great clerk who would give me and my pals free pies and beer (we passed out the pizza we didn't eat to the ubiquitous homeless folks wandering around Cannery)...that guy ended up getting thrown behind bars for possession. Sad shit.
