Ghetto homebrew challenge thread
Make a fermenter out of stuff you can find lying about the house. Post results, hobby brewers/anyone with actual kit need not apply.
Pic related made with raisins, sugar, and baker's yeast

Sterilised everything with boiling water and diluted bleach before use, boiled the mash for 15 minutes to kill anything that might be alive on the raisins.

Because it's easy to accidentally brew the wrong kind of alcohol.

Blindness comes from methanol, which is low enough concentration to be harmless unless you distill your brew or otherwise concentrate it.

This. Buy cheap, processed wines. They're safe.

You dense motherfucker. Do you still think you get hair on your palms if you masturbate?

It's low enough in concentration to be harmless even if you distill or freeze "distill" it. You have to have a handful of extra chromosomes to be able to fuck up either of those methods enough to harm you.

Cases of methanol poisoning related to homemade alcohol are almost always due to dipshits adding extra shit to cut or spike the batch.

OH SHIT YES just picked up a 5 gallon fermenter and some more yeast today

> anyone with actual kit need not apply.
oh. oh well.

I'm still excited to make cider again and jew it out to my friends this fall.

that is some unnecessarily ghetto shit. why didn't you just put a balloon on top? and are you making smaller than gallon batches? smh

i made a co2 diffuser and drank the alcohol after it didnt work out.

I tried to make sugarwine one time, but it ended up tasting like breadwater.

the co2 diffuser actually killed my fish

rasins sound like they would be pretty good in some kind of beer wine homebrew. Have you done this before?

That's because you let it overdose then, you dumbass. You're supposed to measure the BPS in order to make sure you aren't putting too much in. Look in to the Paintball canister method, it only costs about $45 to set up and you can actually control the flow of Co2. It works well when you're saving up to buy a 5lb rig with a solenoid.

that's how I started out, and I turned out fine ;)

I've been considering making cider recently. Do you just buy already pressed cider and ferment it or do you press the apples yourself? Spiced/mulled or left as is?

I really want to make some and keep it around for fall/winter.

>> No.5508360

>>5508065
If it's your first brew, just buy some apple juice and ferment it and make sure you know what you're doing. You'll get cider and then if you're pretty happy with it but want to take it to the next level, then juice 20 pounds of apples. You'll have more of the knowledge to not screw up after all that effort.

>>5506794
A commercial wine from a winery has just as much methanol as a homebrewed wine. Which is, a negligible amount.

>> No.5508433

>>5508065
Like >>5508360 said, go with juice first. I did my first batch last summer with juice, brown sugar and frozen apple juice concentrate and it turned out pretty good.

I just ordered 4 gallons of cider because I can't get any good stuff in the grocery store around here right now. Pretty excited for that to come in the next couple days.

distilling it doesn't increase the amount of methanol.
Drinking a litre of undistilled 10% would probably have more methanol than drinking 250ml of 40%, given you're going to be throwing away the heads. Even if you didn't it would only have the same amount
