Appetizers are fucking stupid. What's the damn point of ruining your appetite right before the main course? They already give you a tremendous amount on the plate, not to mention usually a complimentary soup/salad, so why the fuck do appetizers even exist?

>> No.5392807

Just be sensible with your appetizers, get something you know will be small like olives and don't any anything carby like breads as they fill you up quicker.

So you can be fat.

To enjoy a variety of food. If portion control is your issue, then split an appetizer with one or two other people and don't order a monstrous entree. Or split an entree with someone else. Or take the leftovers home.

I've only ever seen people share appetizers, and food sometimes comes in courses so it's not too crazy.

Maybe with 'murrikan portions. A real appetizer should take no more than a handful of bites to finish. "Appetizers" as we know them are more like "big plates of cheap food to share while your meal is being prepped"

For when you are having a 4 or 5 course meal that has been CORRECTLY portioned.

Appetizers at chains are for sharing with groups of folks, or coupling with drinks.

an appetizer shouldnt be big enough to matter anyway. how do you think tasting menus work? if that was the case there no way you get through 15-20+ courses, or even the traditional 7 course appetizer, soup, salad, fish, meat, cheese, dessert

Plus ive found you can actually eat more if you have something small before your main course arrives and let you savor it more than being super hungry when your food arrives

This. Salt makes you hungrier. Sweet tastes, on the other hand, make you feel full.

So they can cut back on the portions of the main meal.

Also, it's tradition for some of us. Roast isn't the same meal without shrimp cocktail.

i kind of agree. i rarely order appetizers but once in a while i'm hungry enough to eat them and still enjoy my main meal. they're more like a small meal if you don't feel like having a huge meal or spending a lot of money.

>Signals that consistently precede food intake can become conditioned stimuli for a set of bodily responses that prepares the body for food and digestion. These reflexive responses include the secretion of digestive juices into the stomach and the secretion of certain hormones into the blood stream, and they induce a state of hunger. An example of conditioned hunger is the "appetizer effect." Any signal that consistently precedes a meal, such as a clock indicating that it is time for dinner, can cause people to feel hungrier than before the signal. The lateral hypothalamus (LH) is involved in the initiation of eating. The nigrostriatal pathway, which includes the substantia nigra, the lateral hypothalamus, and the basal ganglia have been shown to be involved in hunger motivation.
