So apparently Americans have canned pumpkin? I don't see how this is a good idea and it really disgusts me. What other 'convenient' food related things do you see/buy regardless of country.

Worst thing I've seen as an Ausfag is canned Spaghetti, which isnt that bad, being used in actual spaghetti dishes.

It's for making pumpkin pie. Not as good as the real thing, but acceptable if you live in the burbs. Don't you have pumpkin pie in Oz, you felonious ejecta?

Thanks for showing me that, I think.

Its just boiled pumpkin. its for pies mostly. Although it can good in certian soups. I know your country is notoriously provincial but come on. Try not to be shocked by every different thing you hear of.

Not really, seeing as our main idea of a pie is the meat pie.

Oh. Well, it's sort of this sweet, earthy orange custard type thing. Way better if you use an actual pumpkin, as with all store bought foods.

Frankly -- and this may be an Americanism -- store bought BBQ sauces are fucking FOUL. Sweet globby sticky shit. Like alien catsup with extra corn starch. Except for Stubbs, which is the real thing but not yet distributed nationally I don't think.

>> No.5246730

>>5246714
Interesting, our barbecue sauces tend be half decent, depending on brand. Usually going for something that says its 'extra smokey' or some shit is the worst idea. You couldn't really use them as they're intended but using them as an ingredient here and there is pretty good.

What I really don't get is why you'd want to can something that grows all year round and keeps for months. I'd liken it in retardation level to canning coconuts.

>> No.5246763

>>5246753
Pumpkins don't grow all year around, here. They are planted in spring and ripen in the fall. After that, they're gone until the next fall.
Also, wtf? You've never used canned coconut milk or cream? That's odd.

>> No.5246772

>>5246763
Coconut milk/cream takes a human age to make yourself. You have to grate the coconut, add a bit of water, let it sit and then squeeze the everliving fuck out of it with terminator-like strength. Coconuts can be harvested something like 13 times per year, so just chunking it, putting it in sugar water, and canning that would be ridiculous.

I just looked it up and they just require a reasonably warm and wet soil to grow, which is probably the reason she can grow them all year round in her greenhouse and the same reason that I could buy fresh pumpkins in my local store all through last year.

Canned pumpkin is fine to use in pies. You think I'm going to buy a pumpkin and mash it up myself? Hell no. It's like $3 for enough canned pumpkin to make 3 pies. Considering how long it'd take me to mash that much it's definitely worth it.

Canned pumpkin is a beautiful thing. It takes to it very well unlike so many other vegetables. I dare you to fresh grind pumpkin pulp for pies that taste better than canned pumpkin.

Oh and to add to this: I'm fairly immune to gross while eating. My mom is a nurse and she used to talk about vile things around the dinner table. Doesn't faze me. I was eating unperturbed while watching one of those vegetarian propaganda movies about cows being slaughtered. However, just now, as I was eating a slice of leftover pizza, that fucking chicken in a can made me gag and take a second look at that slice.

I just put the water and meat into a food processor or blender and hit 'liquefy'. Takes 10 seconds.

There a bit of pulp, but that makes it better imo.

Pumpkin on the other hand is cheap as fuck in the fall, and basically not available any other time of year. If you want a pumpkin pie for Christmas dinner, you're sort of stuck with canned pumpkin.

Separating the pumpkin from the pumpkin strings that run up the sides is a pain in the ass.

Also my canned pumpkin says pumpkin on the ingredients, not hubbard squash.
