Yo /ck/,

Is that cooking contest happening again this year? Or did it already happen?

>> No.5222506

you won

>> No.5222504

Last I heard it's not coming back. Too many competitors were getting burned out.

Dang, understandable though.

That being said, it would still be nice to see it come around again, if nothing more than to just have casual competitions in weekly challenges.

>> No.5222611

>>5222551
As one of the competitors last year, I can admit it was pretty grueling to do while dealing with normal life. But I had a blast doing it, and was really able to push myself which made me learn loads of new techniques and recipes. I've thought about taking up the mantle this year, but maybe keeping it more casual, like have one challenge a month, or something like that, so it won't be so hard on everyone. IDK, I'll have to think about it and come up with a plan.

>> No.5222612

>>5222551
Weekly/Monthly casual challenges could definitely be done, if people are interested. I think the most difficult thing about the competition for the hosts is the accumulation of rounds.

>> No.5222691

I really wanted to participate this year because I have the kitchen and the means to finally do it but alas. Oh well, I'd be interested in the weekly or monthly challenges.

>> No.5223296

>>5222551
I'm down for a monthly challenge.

>> No.5223320

bear in mind, everyone, that anyone could theoretically start the competition... they would just have to be someone willing to actually run it and not put forth the idea and give up 2 weeks in.

>> No.5223325

Tell you what, I'll start it up in October, if nobody else has by then. A bit busy now, but October's a period of downtime. I competed in the past, but have no kitchen this year and would still like to participate. I'll even buy a trophy. Also, monthly is way better, eh?

>> No.5224322

or even fortnightly, just those weekly challenges were so rough. I competed last year and was eliminated because I was too sick to put all that effort into making food that week. hell, it normally took me 2-3 days to even decide what i was going to make. If someone booted it back up though, I would definitely compete again.

Looking forward to the hilarity of the epic fail thread.
I know that a lot of anons hate the tripfag festival, but c'mon... it's pretty funny. It's always fail food by nonce cooks.
I hope you guys can get it together. I need the comic relief.

The problem with a cooking contest of that nature is that presentation is everything so cooks with tasty food and bad lighting and equipment are screwed from the getgo.

I used my experience to lend to my imagination when reading the processes used by some of the contestants. Here's a simple example, how do you think these potatoes would taste? There are verticles for each part of this dish.

With enough description and a break down of components, you can get a rough idea of how something would taste. Of course, it's not perfect, but it's still fun, and it's not fair to call them 'fails'.

Absolutely, but maybe with less elaborate dishes, though. I would like to see him last a whole competition. It was definitely a pity that so many people just found the competition took too much of their time. I really liked (__)_) as well. It was cool seeing what non-professionals in both cooking and photography could do.

>> No.5224954

>>5224897
What about doing a baking contest where people could send samples to others and actually taste the food?

>> No.5224961

>>5224954
That would be cool but I think only people who know each other would be willing to do that, ie. people who have already participated or know each other from /ck/. It'd just a couple of people. That also adds a larger financial burden, and internationally it could take up to a month despite paying $10 or more per person.

>> No.5224970

>>5224954
It's a nice idea, but in reality would take too much time and money for most anons. The baked goods would possibly go stale or rot before arriving too.

>> No.5226151

>>5224812
Sure but if people have never tasted the kind of dishes you make how are they to know if they're any good or not even after seeing them made?

>> No.5226158

So who won last year? I didn't follow it much.

>> No.5226198

we should have a pizza contest

>> No.5226231

>>5226198
I'm OK with this idea. The big cooking contest can be intimidating to noob cooks but I think anyone on /ck/ could make a pizza. That would be really fun to have a board wide /ck/ pizza contest.

We should organize these monthy actually and do simple foods like pizza, hamburgers, chili, hot dogs, grilled cheese, etc that way more people would participate.

>> No.5226252

>>5226242
Yea, the big key I think would be to keep the dishes simple things that anyone could make at different cooking skill levels. ALMOST anyone on /ck/ could cook up a burger or grilled cheese and post pics, not many of us are going to join a beef wellington cook off. I'd definitely participate.

I think a monthy cooking thing would also be great for our board community and culture.

>> No.5226253

>>5226241
not really

>> No.5226255

>>5226231
I was considering holding a monthly contest, but there's a few problems with that. First, you couldn't have dozens of entries. People would get sick of voting. I was thinking that, like the last challenge, everyone would need a name and an identifier, and then only the first say, 10 people who signed up could enter. Because otherwise you'd still have to have a qualifying round. IDK if anyone remembers the first three "open" rounds last year, but they were insane and poor Hearts was pulling her hair out trying to tabulate the results.

>> No.5226257

nope, just appearance.

May as well crown those companies who take the pictures for fast food menus king.

>> No.5226261

>>5226257
That's why people had to submit verticals and recipes with their entries. It gives you a much better idea of how the dish not only tastes, but how it was prepared and plated.

>> No.5226267

>>5226255
>dozens of entries

There would be no need. There would be one single entree each month and anyone could participate. It would be like a simplified /ck/ cooking challenge that we have every month instead of a big thing once a year. I think shortening the entrees to one single dish would encourage the more casual coo/ck/s to participate who otherwise doesn't have the time or motivation to make multiple entrees. Plus it would be monthly and year round which would encourage year round participation from the most dedicated but really anyone could participate in whatever random months they choose to participate in and skip others.

>> No.5226274

>>5226267
I understand that, but who the hell is going to sit down and vote for say....50 entries? And then, someone has to tabulate all those votes. It would be outrageous. Especially since even more people would participate.

>> No.5226285

>>5226274
Maybe like we did... 2 years ago? When there was a official OC day across the board. The goal was to get as many cook along threads as possible that one day.

Do that once a month with a theme?

>> No.5226286

>>5226267
For me the worst things were the eliminations. Once I got eliminated I lost interest and it would have been cool to be scored and try to make good food even when there was no chance of me winning. But starting like 25th overall and finishing 12th or something would be totally cool even if I diin'tr win.

>> No.5226292

>>5226285
Yes, once a month with a theme. I've never participated in the cooking challenge because its just too much dedication, I'm a more casual cook like probably most people on this board. But if there were a once a month one dish thing where we all cook the same thing I'd def be all over that, as I'd imagine a whole bunch of other anons would be. If somebody loves us and is actually willing to set it up, you'd be doing God's work for this board. We could actually become a 4chan community.

At work today I worked out a simple rough draft idea for a monthly challenge.
It would be held one week out of the month from 12:01 AM Monday to the following 12:01 AM Monday. There would be some amount of theme that would change every month/contest. Everyone interested would post a single meal/submission that follows the theme in the allotted time. (Anytime between two Mondays.) Much more casual and easier for all. Let me know what you think Ro/ck/stars!

>> No.5226947

>>5226905
Now that I've actually bothered to read the posts from today...
I agree with what a lot of anons are saying.
About how we should simplify it more.
Still have the themes, of course, but make them more accessible to the average coo/ck/. Also I just thought that having it from the first of the month to the eighth would definitely clear up some issues that may arise. Keep the normal rules, the timestamped finished product, posting under a continuous surname, all of that. Just simplify it for the coo/ck/s and the one running it.

I'd rather we had the whole natural month. Last contest caught me away from home so I couldn't submit anything during Xmas which killed the competition for me. Instead give people the whole month but absolutely enforce that once all criteria have been satisfied for a submission, that people can't go back and say "oh, that was just a recipe I did the other day" once they got voted low on it, which I saw happen more than once last time around.

>> No.5227587

>>5226292
I like a theme but to cook the same dish? I also don't really know about simplifying the competition for the average cook because I think it's simple enough already. For instance, there was the 'chicken breast' theme one year. Any kind of cook can cook chicken breasts how they prefer. To simplify it as in to say grilled cheeses rather than beef wellingtons - I think that's a moot point because competition themes aren't like that anyway.

>>5227227
It can't be perfect but everybody accepts that and if people choose, they include spice measurements.

>> No.5228822

>>5227463
It'd have a little less competition involved compared to the yearly that has prizes and whatnot. The only real prize you'd get from this would be a feeling of self satisfaction and my personal thumbs up. Also, if you happen to miss a week there's always the beginning of next month! I do agree with the strict one submission per handle policy though. Thanks for that.
