I think it's a relevant topic that was worded in a sensationalist and heavy-handed manner by the OP.

I care about the produce I use when cooking - that includes whether it was humanely sourced. Some people say humane is incompatible with any animal product used in cooking.

If I had to kill a chicken I wouldn't be able to do it.
But I would have no problem keeping then in a large enclosure for eggs so long as they have enough room to move around.

Though I agree with you on the humane part, I have no problem killing and eating my prey. I've killed rabbits, chickens, deer, and boar, and I ate them all. I think wild is the most humane way of all. But I also think people shouldn't be so disconnected from their food source that they won't kill something that they will eat. But I'm also not going to force it on you, that's your thing.

You're mistaking compassion felt for compassion expressed. Then again, if you actually felt the compassion, wouldn't it influence your actions? Why is the chicken's life worth less to you than a chicken sandwich or whatever food you didn't need to eat? Most people are compassionate towards pets; they treat them well and take care of them, and yes they eventually die but generally not by their owner's hand except in a case like incurable sickness where death is the merciful option. I sat again, "humane slaughter" is a marketing term used in an effort to make people feel less guilty about doing bad things.

Oh god. Here's the thing: Is factory farming bad? Yes.
Will people ever give a shit? no. The success of the fast food industry has proven beyond all doubt that people don't give a shit about where their food comes from, merely that it is covered in mayo and cheese. Furthermore, breeding of these animals has optimized them for efficiency. You grow a 4 pound chicken with 8 pounds of feed. That is fucking amazing. All this means is that all food animals, when they should be killed honestly and preferably by those who intend to eat them are no longer animals, they are just things that become food. This is true of people, too. You are not an individual, irreplaceable human soul, you are a fucking product valued according to the amount of money you can make someone by working for them. You are little better off. So be a vegan if it makes you happy. Or don't if you don't care. The fact that a lot of our way of life would have to be compromised in order for the cruelty to food animals to end stands in the way of anything else.

People who are into bodybuilding are consuming protein isolates period. Omnivores use whey, vegans use pea/brown rice/hemp/spirulina/soy/whatever else. All of these are good sources of protein with nice amino acid profiles, and you can get ripped as a vegan just as easily as someone guzzling whey.

For non-bodybuilders and strength athletes, getting enough protein is never an issue just by eating a balanced diet.

No? No. Because you don't actually think that animals being killed is a bad thing, and we both know it.

I'll also just point out that any area of land that isn't farmed or cleared for some other reason, will be wild. It will have wild animals living in it - and dying in it. Every day there'll be more deaths. If you genuinely care about animal deaths then you'll understand that the kindest thing to do would be to clear all wild areas so that there are no more animals. Sure, there will be a whole bunch of deaths initially - but those are all animals that would end up dying anyway, and by taking them all out at once we'll have prevented them from breeding and producing more animals to suffer and die.

This is of course ridiculous, and I don't expect you or anyone else to actually hold this position. My point is simply that animal death is inevitable, and if hold any sort of environmental beliefs, that preserving nature is a good thing to do etc., then you have to accept on some level that animal suffering isn't really that big a deal.

Not as much chickens because they aren't mammals and share less native flora with humans, but ranches with millions of cows pose the threat. Animals can't live that close together in dirty conditions without them spreading disease to one another. Therefore we force on them more and more antibiotics. This is a Darwinian engine for the ultimate infectious bacteria. It wants to kill anything it can, and evolved specifically to be immune to antibiotics.

Food technology constantly caters to new forms of infectious/intoxicating bacteria. For example, Listeria monocytogenes didn't used to be a foodborne illness. Now that soft-ripened cheeses can be refrigerated, the perfect breeding ground has been created for Listeria. This has killed hundreds of children and pregnant women in the U.S.

Another example is E. coli O157:H7. It didn't used to be a threat, but cows are dirtier now, and Jack in the Box killed a few babies in the 80s while still adapting to this deadly organism.
