You're paying to keep their brand name afloat in the market.
There wasn't much competition 'back then', so they didn't have to advertise much. Everyone knew Campbells.
20 years later, now they're just another soup on the shelf next to dozens and dozens of others.

Some people still buy it out of brand loyalty, but now they've got to contend with progresso, 'store' brand, celebrity chefs, diet fads and everything else.
Hence why a tiny can of chicken noodle is almost $3 a fucking can in Indiana.
