5104078 No.5104078[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

I finished the Glenlivet 12, the Elijah Craig got sadly stolen at a Party and the Glenfiddich 18 is gone for a while now, so I thought it was time to order some new whiskey.

I'm most excited about the Lagavulin of course, the Speyside was on sale, I don't know much about it other than it's the first batch from a small distillery and the wild turkey is the replacement for the elijah (I might get that one again because I loved it for bourbon). Which one should I try first?

Also whiskey thread.

I actually thought about pic related one time, but those small ones are just for distilling wine and stuff, not real mash, and bigger ones I don't have money nor place for and they would be illegal (I know that's the essence of moonshining but I don't need that). Also it wouldn't be whiskey without casks and where would I get a 2 liter cask... make it myself? Hmmmm... not a bad idea actually.

Those little alembics aren't big enough. Twenty liters is about as small as you want to go if you're going to make it worth your time and effort.

>Money and space
Literally all you need to make a pot still (ideal for whiskey, brandy, rum, etc.) is a 20 liter stainless pot, a brass compression fitting to attach the condenser to the lid of the pot, a coil of 1/2 inch(12.5mm?) soft copper tubing about 15 or 20 feet (4.5-6 meters?) long, and a bucket to fill with water so it cools the vapor.

>Illegal
Well, who's going to know unless you tell someone? Just you, me and the NSA.

>wouldn't be whiskey without casks

This is not true. Whiskey is defined as any spirit that is distilled from a fermentation of malted grain.

As for aging, see:

A 20 liter pot should fit on your stove easily, shouldn't it? I'm sure you could find a place to store the pieces when not in use.

If you didn't want to to make the 'worm' condenser, you could build a liebig condenser fed by a water pump. That's just a straight piece of pipe with a water jacket around it. The vapors get condensed on the inside by the water flowing around the outside. They're a lot more compact than a 'worm' but not as simple as just bending a tube.

My go to whiskey has been, for quite a while, Seagrams VO. I like it, it's cheap enough for me to buy consistently.

Lately, however, I've been benching off into more intricate scotches, one of which I've REALLY been enjoying has been Aberlour's 12 year. I've been experimenting with others lately too like Glenfiddich's 12, MacCallan's 12, Balvenie's 12 and their 21. But the Aberlour is one that I've really liked. Any recommendations of reasonably priced scotches that might be good to try now?

Hi, Slyrs guy!

I finally got to try Glenrothes. I forget which exact one I had, but anyway, I saw a miniature at a shop so I bought it for six bucks.

It's ok, not great, has a sort of weird flavor to it. Actually, very much like the butterscotch candy we have in the U.S. (which makes sense, the candy was originally butter plus scotch cooked down).

Sticking with Laphroaig.

Yeah, like I said, the sweetest, fruitiest scotch I know. But as I suspected for peatlovers it's not the ideal one. I had a little tasting with two friends (We did Glenrothes, Cardhu 18, Old Pulteney, Laphrooog and Lagavulin 16) and they too didn't really like the Glenrothes but digged the Pulteney very much.

But to each his own I say.

I don't know which version of Bunhabhain (or however you spell it) I tried, but it had three very distinct flavors. I don't remember the first one, I think probably medicinal. The second was, I shit you not, vomit -- it tasted like I had just thrown up. The third was a very pleasant sweet aftertaste.

Definitely not worth it to me to have to go through the first two stages to get to the third.

I'd be interested in hearing whether you also get three distinct stages of flavor (in each sip, I mean -- it's a oooone, TWO!, threeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee sort of sensation), and if so, what the middle stage is like for you.
