danishfag from /tg/ here

Dark ales and lagers are my jam

I personally enjoy quite a lot of different danish microbrew brands

Skovlyst, Skagen Brewhouse, Herselv Brewhouse - and many more

They all make delicious dark ales

Rich, black, most are unfiltered, and all of them various levels of smoky flavor - from liquid tar, to light filtered marlboro

Trader Joe's farmed out Belgian-style beers are pretty good. I always pick up a few bottles when I'm there.

I've been drinking a lot of Sierra Nevada stout recently. It's very simple, true to the style, and no-frills, but very well made. I wish more American craft brewers would learn from SN: keep it simple. Dogfish Head, I'm looking at you. 90% of your beers are shit.

I recently picked up a 6-pack of Killian's Irish stout because it was on sale and I'm pissed off at the increased beer prices (a 6-pack of Sam Adams Boston lager is NOT worth $10, I'll have an imported Weihenstephaner for the same price please).

I did splurge on one of my absolute favorite dark beers though: Gulden Draak. The price keeps shooting up, but they could charge $20 per bottle and I'll still drink it every winter.

I meant to add that I really liked the Killian's stout. Way better than their Irish Red. Guess I got too pissed off at beer prices to remember to include my thoughts. I need another beer.

>> No.5087143

My favorites are Stone's Imperial Russian Stout and their Sublimely Self-Righteous Ale.

I got Goose Island's Bourbon County as a christmas gift and it was glorious. Also can't go wrong with Fuller's dark beers.

I'm waiting for march to try the barrel aged Old Rasputin, Stone IRS and Speedway stout.

>> No.5087157

I just bought a 4-pack of 375mL bottles of Ovila Belgian Quad fermented with sugar plums (made by SN with help from real monks). $13 for that amount of that kind of beer is rare, so I figured why not. Plan on trying one soon.

I am also sitting on a few bottles of Narwhal, one from 2012, and 4 bottles of Courage RIS, 2 from 2011, 2 from 2012. I wish I could get ahold of one of the 20 year old bottles from the original brewery.

And OP, TJ contracts their Belgian-style brewing out to Unibroue. That is a mighty fine deal if you like the product. They had actual La Fin Du Monde at my local store for $4.99 last month.

>> No.5087203

Are trader joe's store brand beers actually good? I always see them when I go but assume they are low quality beers.

>> No.5087235

>>5087115

The Vintage Ale is made by Unibroue, who make excellent Belgian-style ales, the best I've had from North America.

$256ish @ $5/bottle
Pretty fuckin cheap for the quality.
I can't find Unibroues own brands cheaper than $9/bottle

>>5087203
Not sure about if they have others but their Vintage Ale is contracted out to Unibroue which is very good Canadian brewery. Vintage Ale is seasonal and doesn't last long so buy it while you can.... hence the 48 bottles

I know your feel. I bought 36 bottles of their creamstout when I found it in a BevMo in Los Angeles.

I just picked up their winter variety pack which had Cherry chocolate bock in it. First beer I would actually describe with a chocolate flavor. Its excellent.

Turns out there are some excellent west coast breweries too.

I just don't drink anywhere near enough to need 48 bottles on hand, holy shit.

Tried an oatmeal stout last week, it was pretty good.

I haven't had the beer myself but judging from the label (vintage) it's one of this high ABV beers that can store well, and ages subtly over time kind of like wine. My local brewery did a batch like that (a barley wine I believe), and I bought 3-5 big bottles of it, stored them and tried one a year on the anniversary. Interesting to note the changes and how it aged.

Plus if you drink even once a week a 48 bottle supply will last you less than a year.

I'm heading out there this spring(Early April) and we're trying our hand at getting a bottle of KBS.

Also, this may not be high in alcohol % but holy fuck this is one of the best Chocolate stouts I've had
