So. I just found out from the Daily Show that California style pizza is a thing, which confuses me because I'm a Californian. I had never actually heard of this.

So, I hop on the Google, and lo and behold. It exists.

...people actually eat this? And they enjoy it? I mean. I was a little confused by Chicago pizza, but this? What. I mean...do you just kinda grab whatever and then toss it on a poor, unassuming pizza crust?

I've lived in NorCal for 5 years, and I've never seen mango chutney or peking duck on a pizza. It's hard to get any non traditional pizzas here. Maybe in shit tier LA, but not so much NorCal. The most " unusual" pizza I've been able to even find here is Gyro pizza and Shawarma pizza. (which is pretty damn tasty) I'm sure there's some places somewhere that do weird pizzas, but I have yet to run into any of them. There's more than a dozen pizza places within 1 1/2 miles of me, and they all do either NYC style pizza or Chicago style (both deep dish and thin crust).

>>California style
>Pointlessly loaded with veggies and generally tastes like shit
Dude, naw, California was all about putting unconventional toppings and sauces on a crust, with no allegiance to tomato sauce or cheese whatsoever. Seafood, barbecued or smoked meats, eggs and caviar, different cheeses, and cream sauces are among the popular non-veggie toppings. Some are horrendously shitty, some are amazingly awesome, and dismissing all of them would be stupid.
>>Philly style
>Used when trying to mimic the shitty unseasoned and tasteless beef found in Philadelphia
Naw again dude, different areas have popular local toppings, or have toppings associated with the area even if they don't like or eat the pizza there (e.g. Greek or Hawaiian) but that doesn't make it a style, it's a shorthand way of ordering toppings on a conventional pizza. The only different style Philly has is their tomato pie, which just has tomato sauce and no cheese. I think they don't call it Philly style cuz it'd be embarrassing. If they did away with tomato sauce and mozzarella to make a cheesesteak pizza, it would just be California style with Philly cheesesteak toppings. They do have a pizza steak, which is a cheesesteak sandwich with mozza and pizza sauce.

I live in Ann Arbor MI, where poofy-thick-crusted Sicilian style has some local following, and which splintered into Detroit-style way back. Detroit-style (and any Sicilian styles I've had in Michigan) are square pizzas, as they were originally baked in ubiquitous parts trays repurposed from auto plants/suppliers...or so legend has it. Detroit has a particularly crispy thick crust, sometimes twice-baked or brushed with butter before cooking, and puts marinara on the top. The overall effect can look a bit like Chicago's deep dish, but it's way more dough, with a pretty normal amount of toppings, in contrast to a somewhat moderate or even thinnish crust depth on Chicago styles.

>> No.4964322

>>4963998
Here's this week's pizza list from Cheeseboard (they make just one kind of pizza each day), one of the most popular pizza places in the East Bay.

>Cremini mushrooms, onions, mozzarella and French goat cheese, garlic olive oil, fresh herbs.

>Roasted eggplants, onions, mozzarella, parmesan breadcrumbs, tomato sauce, basil.

>Roasted potatoes, roasted yams, caramelized onions, mozzarella and Raclette cheese, garlic olive oil, fresh herbs.

>Roasted butternut squash, lacinato kale, mozzarella and cheddar cheese, garlic olive oil, fresh herbs.

>Roma tomatoes, onions, mozzarella and provolone cheese, garlic olive oil, fresh herbs.

So obviously there are some more adventurous pizzas, but also traditional ones. And even the more "out there" ones still have a semblance of decency.
